New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Bucket Boys & Sausage Queen Boss Ale

Tapped April 27th, 2018
The Germans have long proven that sausages and beer go well together, with their timeless wurst & Weiss combination the default setting for any hastily put together Oktoberfest event. So it’s not new ground Bucket Boys are covering in their collaboration with the folks from Dulwich Hill’s The Sausage Factory, but ground that perhaps doesn’t get the consideration it merits outside of Munich beerhalls. The brief for this beer essentially came in two parts. The first was to make something… Read more

Newstead Brewing Ariana Single Hop IPA

Tapped April 27th, 2018
Ariana is a one of the many new hop varieties coming out of Germany, and she's looks to be a beauty. So, when Newstead heard about it, they decided to give it a crack as the fifth beer in their Single Hop IPA series. The beer's white head holds its shape like soft meringue, and a soft, golden glow hides the depth of flavour within. On the nose is rich blackcurrant, like you’re sniffing a glass of Ribena. The first sip is thick and boozy, with the sweet malt carrying ripe stonefruit and and vanilla… Read more

Sauce Brewing Fresh-Hop Sauce WXXPA

Tapped April 27th, 2018
As fate would have it, on the day of an unscheduled visit to the Sauce brewery the brewers were midway through making their second fresh hop beer of the 2018 hop harvest season. The first had been and gone a few weeks prior, just a tiny test batch made from the scrawny hops that’d grown out in their beer garden. This next beer was on a different level. Peering into the steaming stainless steel cauldron and seeing it stuffed with hop bags brought to mind laundry day after an extended camping holiday… Read more

Little Bang Schwang Tangerine Sour

Tapped April 27th, 2018
Maybe it's the power of suggestion, but it really is the sort of word that comes to mind after your first sip of this Little Bang beer: schwang. A little like a Derren Brown experiment, the lead in to the beer's launch saw random images released daily on Facebook accompanied by slogans along the lines of: “everybody, every Schwang,” “for a hard earned Schwang,” and “when there is nothing left to Schwang… choose Schwang.” As for the schwang in the glass, copious amounts of American tangerine… Read more

Green Beacon The Botanist 2018 – Galaxy & Enigma

Tapped April 26th, 2018
Green Beacon has released fresh harvest beers under The Botanist label for a few years now but, this year, they’ve stepped things up. Rather than brew one gentler pale ale with a few varieties of hop, they’ve brewed two wet hop IPAs, each featuring just one hop variety: one with Galaxy, one with Enigma. The Galaxy gives you a taste of Galaxy hops on steroids: huge bursts of passionfruit and a little of that citrus brightness. With the sweetness and strong effervescence of this beer, it gives… Read more

Frenchies W.H.I.S.P.A. Wet Hop Harvest Ale

Tapped April 26th, 2018
Following this year’s hop harvest, the team from Frenchies corralled a dozen or so fellow brewers into each brewing a beer using fresh hops, then hosted something of a collective launch party under the banner of the Fresh Harvest Beer Festival. The Frenchies’ contribution to the occasion was and is a Wet Hopped India Session Red Ale, which gets shortened to the far catchier name WHISPA (or the marginally less catchy WHISRA, if we’re splitting hairs and paying attention to the faded fine print… Read more

Beerland Alte Schule Dunkel Kellerbier

Tapped April 26th, 2018
Another month brings another Beerland limited release, this time one brewed at Whitfords Brewing Co. Alte Schule, or Old School, is a kellerbier, a title that refers to the cool cellars (keller) which, at one stage, would have been where unfiltered lagers were fermented ready to be served directly from a wooden cask in a tavern or beer garden. This hazy brown lager with ruby highlights delivers nutty and slightly toasted malts balanced by honeycomb sweetness. The Tettnanger hops provide a little… Read more

4 Pines Keller Door Big Brekky Porter

Tapped April 25th, 2018
Shaking off the shackles of the gold hued fruity ales that define summertime, 4 Pines has slipped into something a little cosier as we slide towards the cooler seasons. Big Brekky Porter is the latest limited edition addition to their colourful Keller Door series, although keen observers (and early starters) may note it’s a beer they've poured before in small batches at their brewpub, starting back in 2015 when it was made for a beer breakfast during what was then Sydney Craft Beer Week. Bridge Road Mayday Hills Death By Lightning

Tapped April 25th, 2018
The naming regime for Bridge Road's Mayday Hills range gets more and more abstruse with each passing release. The past few have opted for images of the most unusual ingredient in the beer – raspberries, honey, elderflower – instead of words; here, we have a man being struck down by a lightning bolt. So, at risk of creating a situation akin to the time we took Hargreaves Hill founder Simon Walkenhorst at his word that a just-released IPA was called Melanie "because it's really melony"… Read more

Little Bang Brewing Geezer Pleaser ESB

Tapped April 25th, 2018
Walk into the Little Bang cellar door and eight taps greet your presence. To the left of those taps sits a hand pump, resting high on the bar. Yet, despite its permanence, it's rare you'll find a beer deemed worthy of pouring from it. In the past, it's been graced by a 12 percent imperial stout named Sludgebeast and a 10 percent barley wine name Galactopus; now, for autumn 2018, they're joined by a rather more traditional inhabitant of such tools: an ESB called Geezer Pleaser. It pours a rich, slightly… Read more

Rocky Ridge Holy S**t, It's A Mid! The Kiwi Fruit Edition

Tapped April 25th, 2018
Already in its short existence, Rocky Ridge has made a considerable impact on the WA beer scene. Besides almost out-collaborating every other brewery in the state, the steady tide of limited releases has left little room for what most would consider a traditional core range. This seems a tenuous means of building a brand and, to a degree, it probably would be for owner/head brewer Hamish Coates if it wasn’t for the consistently high quality of his releases. Which brings us to the second iteration… Read more

Mr Banks Red Ale

Tapped April 25th, 2018
While there's nary a fallen leaf in sight, it’s hard not to look at a can of Mr Banks’ Red Ale and not have images of America in the Fall come to mind. Maybe it’s the woman draped in red wearing a wolf as a hoodie on the front – Little Red Riding Hood as her grandmother's nemesis, perhaps; something about which Freud, surely, would have plenty to say. But it’s fitting for such a package to conjure autumn, as this red ale is very much an autumnal beer. It’s got plenty of body and sweetness… Read more

Modus Operandi Dream Weaver Unfiltered IPA

Tapped April 24th, 2018
You could feign surprise that Modus Operandi’s latest limited release is a New England style IPA. You’d fool no one. At least, no one that’s been paying attention. In roughly the past year’s worth of monthly one-off beers from the Mona Vale brewery, the bulk of them have been hazy or an IPA or both. Indeed, few local brewers have dedicated as much time and resource towards an apparent fascination with what became, with surprising rapidity, the defining beer style of 2017. 3 Ravens Wild Ravens Golden Sour & Riesling Spinoff & Rustic Ale

Tapped April 24th, 2018
Wild Ravens is the name given to the series of mixed fermentation beers from Thornbury's 3 Ravens. And, even for a brewery that's put itself among the most adventurous and experimental in recent times, it tends to be where their wilder flights of fancy are found. For autumn 2018, they've released three at once: two of them closely related and a third that's a piece very much of its own. The Golden Sour is a beer that's been a long time in the making, starting out a relatively simple affair, featuring… Read more

Innate Brewers Wet Dreams Wet Hop Pale Ale

Tapped April 24th, 2018
"One small Wet Dream, please." Bartender giggles. OK then: "One large Wet Dream, please." Outright laughter. This isn’t getting any better. I’m sure the novelty will wear off as the kegs drain but, as one of the first punters to try their new wet hopped pale ale, it would appear Innate Brewers have created one of the more awkward beer moments in recent memory. Indian Ocean Plumed Serpent Chocolate Stout

Tapped April 24th, 2018
They’ve made an incredible imperial stout that’s not an imperial stout. That’s a fair bit of promise to deliver on but the respected venue manager who served that comment amid other praise while pouring the beer may have captured the very essence of Plumed Serpent. While it's a far smaller beer – 7.5 percent ABV in stature – its cohesive balance and execution have created a beer with poise reminiscent of a 12 percent ABV Omnipollo-esque stout. Brewmanity Tango & Splash Juicy Lager

Tapped April 23rd, 2018
If you ever spent a Friday night at home, back when you could count the number of Australian television stations on one hand, chances are at some point you caught at least some of Tango & Cash. The buddy cop movie saw Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell team up to defeat drug lords in a story that’s pretty much indistinguishable from countless other 1980s blockbusters. 2 Brothers Beerhall Series Hop Harvest Ungespundet

Tapped April 23rd, 2018
With so many breweries making fresh hop beers, how do you make yours stand out? You could, like 2 Brothers Brewing, consider brewing a lager as most brewers choose to brew harvest ales. Better yet, you could choose to brew an Ungespundet: the kind of beer with which even the more historically minded beer nerds are likely to be unfamiliar. Ungespundet is a type of unfiltered lager historically (and still) brewed using open tanks – the term translates as "unbunged" – in the Upper Franconia… Read more

Bridge Road Bling De Wilde Series

Tapped April 23rd, 2018
Bridge Road Brewers put out a phenomenal amount of beers each year – especially when you consider how many of them are released in bottles as well as on tap. Many of them are experimental, with the brewery exploring new techniques, ingredients, hybrids and the like, in part to see how they turn out but also with an educational aspect; their single hop IPAs can help people understand the characters of different hops, for example; releases like this offer insight into how different yeasts, bugs and… Read more

Mornington Peninsula Brewery Artisanal The Farm

Tapped April 20th, 2018
For its first Artisanal barrel aged release of 2018, Mornington Peninsula Brewery pays homage to both its locality and the brewers of Belgium. Taking its name from a popular surf spot near Flinders on Mornington Peninsula, The Farm is a saison that’s been taking shape in French oak barrels with Brettanomyces for company. It would appear the Brett strain chosen here isn't of the barnyard funk variety, despite the beer's name, as The Farm delivers more of a fruit-laden mix of flavours. With a smooth… Read more
