New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Beerland Brewing Run Of The Mill IPA

Tapped July 25th, 2018
In one of their more interesting recent releases, Beerland Brewing has taken inspiration from the rye bread beverage kvass. This fermented bread drink is popular in Slavic and Baltic countries as well as throughout Russia, where its low ABV – typically under 1 percent – sees it positioned as something like a soft drink, especially when flavoured with fruit. Although drawing upon such historical influences, Run of the Mill takes a decidedly more contemporary path in the form of an IPA. Albany… Read more

Edge Brewing Project Champayne Brut Lager

Tapped July 24th, 2018
While in WA for the inaugural Perth Royal Beer Awards Carnival, we bumped into a Crafty Cabal member who's also a homebrewer. He was eagerly discussing his intention to take the Brut IPA style currently fadding its way across the country in a new direction and brew an IPL. Sadly, it was a bubble we had to burst as we knew Edge had already given it a whirl and had a can awaiting delivery to Crafty Towers. In the current climate, it was, of course, only a matter of time... There are various nods to… Read more

Eagle Bay & Mane Liquor & Kyle Hughes-Odgers & Mary Street Bakery Donut Attack

Tapped July 24th, 2018
For their fourth annual winter collaboration, Eagle Bay, Mane Liquor and artist Kyle Hughes-Odgers have taken the idea of a pastry stout to its literal conclusion by inviting the Mary Street Bakery team to join them. Yes, the name is a giveaway, although these are not your average donuts. Over the past few years, the artisans have greatly raised the standard when it comes to cinnamon sugar dusted circles of dough so the inclusion of 150 of the bakery’s fluffy, four-inch treats in this imperial… Read more

Boatrocker Sternweisse

Tapped July 23rd, 2018
If you've paid even the slightest bit of notice to the Boatrocker story over the years, you'll be aware they've developed a close working relationship with Melbourne's Starward Whisky. Foremost among their joint efforts is the annual release of the barrel aged imperial stout Ramjet, but they've done more besides including, back in 2015, a single barrel's worth of a beer they called Sternweisse, a "double barrel aged Brett Berliner Weisse". While that tiny run won't have registered with… Read more

Mash Brewing Lemon / Lime Cheesecake IPA

Tapped July 23rd, 2018
WA's Mash Brewing has entered the second half of 2018 with renewed enthusiasm and a pair of limited releases. The first sees the Swan Valley brewery putting a dessert spin on the NEIPA style in a beer that arrives as more concept than a sweet tooth’s delight. The tight, pillowy head holds aromas of vanilla and heaps of citrus (lemon and lime peel was added), characters that become more prominent – the vanilla in particular – on tasting, while, as they fade, biscuit takes their place. Indeed,… Read more

Nomad Brewing Supersonic DIPA Rainforest Lime Edition

Tapped July 23rd, 2018
A second in quick succession within the growing series of Supersonic double IPAs from Nomad has arrived in the form of a Rainforest Lime edition. Taking inspiration from the original Supersonic but with rather a lot more to do with the recent Finger Lime edition, this one sees the surprisingly malt-driven demeanour of its predecessor set aside for something that really does throw the lime to the fore. It starts off strong, serving up aromas of orange, grapefruit, passionfruit and a touch of peach… Read more

Boatrocker Daddy Koel & House Red

Tapped July 21st, 2018
The barrel program at Boatrocker is really coming into its own now, with time, the acquisition of more oak and a growing inventory of liquids of various forms and ages giving Matt Houghton and his team an ever-broader palette from which to draw. And, if the 2018 Indies beer awards are any guide, it's one that's delivering great results too. As well as taking out the Champion Medium Brewery trophy at June's awards, the brewery also snaffled two Champion Beer trophies, one for Ramjet, the storied barrel… Read more

Mountain Goat Barrel Breed Imperial Stout 2018

Tapped July 20th, 2018
The wintry leg of Mountain Goat's Barrel Breed trilogy is back for 2018. As with this year's Barley Wine, the beer was aged in a number of ex Tennessee whiskey barrels before the contents of the best nine were blended to create the 9.3 percent ABV beer. As you'd expect with such a beer, there's a lengthy roll call of malts in the mix but, rather more intriguingly, there's also the appearance of a hop variety we've not seen in a local beer before (at least not knowingly). It goes by the snappy title… Read more

Batch Brewing Co Elsie's Other Udder

Tapped July 20th, 2018
Amid the torrent of new beers that flows unabated from the tanks of the Batch Brewing Company, one of the notable things about their range is that a permanent place has long been made for Elsie, their milk stout. This is a beer style that feels like it ought not to have cachet with modern drinkers. It feels like an old fashioned English thing, one whose heyday might have come and gone when Ena Sharples downed her last pint and walked out the doors of The Rover’s Return. But Batch brews it all year… Read more

Akasha Lupulin Fog

Tapped July 20th, 2018
Cast your mind back a year or two. It’s not that long but in some ways a lifetime, and certainly so in the swift moving beer world. It was a simpler time, one when extreme murkiness in an IPA was likely to be perceived more as a fault than a fad. How times have changed. Few are the breweries that haven’t toyed with a "hazy" New England style IPA. When Akasha unfurled its Lupulin Fog at the 2017 GABS festival there were few local versions of the style. Here was a super fruity beer strikingly… Read more

New England Big Winter 2018

Tapped July 20th, 2018
For winter 2018, the New England Brewing Company’s ode to the cooler months comes pre-wrapped in a can so cosy in appearance you may want to cuddle it. A word of warning, however: its embrace is stronger than it seems. Big Winter is a Belgian dark ale, one that helps warm through the worst of any winter weather. It’s a beer to counter snow and shivering, for retreating from frost to find fire. So it doesn’t hide its strength. It doesn’t mean to and it doesn’t need to. It’s a beer all… Read more

Prancing Pony The Zeppelin All Hop NEIPA

Tapped July 20th, 2018
After upgrading their brewhouse to one that is no longer a fire-fired upscale version of brewer Frank Samson's old homebrew kit, Prancing Pony switched their "Fire Brewed" tag to "Long Flavour". Here, they add another pairing, with this beer debuted at the 2018 Beer & BBQ Fests declared an "All Hop" NEIPA. And, while we're pretty sure they haven't put all the hops in the world into it (four new varieties have been released globally in the time it's taken you to get… Read more

Barossa Valley Brewing Chocolate Coffee Stout

Tapped July 20th, 2018
The Cosmos can work in funny ways. For some reason (it was having the word "segue" pop into my head, if you really want to know), the tasting notes for this beer rapidly started incorporating references to drivetime DJs before moving into Smooth FM territory. Said note-taking done, I picked up the can to see what the brewers had to say and they were all about Barry White's Smooth FM suited crooning. So, you can probably imagine where this is going... Mr Banks Champagne For My Real Friends Brut IPA

Tapped July 19th, 2018
In its short existence to date, Mr Banks has shown a willingness to take on new trends in beer, particularly when it comes to IPA. The Seaford brewery has put out well received NEIPAs and now has trained its sights on the latest IPA craze to sweep the nation: Brut IPA. It's a style also referred to as Champagne IPA and you certainly know it when faced by these cans, wrapped in golden bubbles and declaring the contents as "Champagne for my real friends". Wheaty Brewing Corps & Tiny Rebel & Doctor's Orders Whey Puft

Another successful Good Beer Wheaty has delivered yet another inventive collaboration at the expanding Adelaide brewpubs. This time Darren from Doctor's Orders returned while Gaz from Welsh powerhouse Tiny Rebel made his Wheaty debut. Darren is known for throwing weird ingredients in beer and Tiny Rebel have a very popular beer called Stay Puft, a marshmallow porter and the new beer was sparked from a combination of the two. Big Shed The Shirt Front Russian Imperial Stout

Tapped July 19th, 2018
Taken literally, a shirt front is exactly that: the front of one’s shirt. However, used as a verb, it describes the action of charging into someone head on. In 2014, then Prime Minister Tony Abbott promised to shirt front Russian President Vladimir Putin, a rather comical promise that hasn’t been forgotten by the Big Shed crew (and which stands in stark contrast to the approach another world "leader" has been taking to the Bear in recent times). Thus it was that when they wanted to… Read more

Smiling Samoyed ESB 2018

Tapped July 19th, 2018
Autumn weather in South Australia tends to remain quite warm with the odd week of cold thrown in to prepare people for winter. The sort of beer style suited for such unpredictable temperature fluctuations is an ESB. Smiling Samoyed's is brewed using traditional English ingredients, including East Kent Golding hops and an English yeast strain. A rich copper colour starts the ESB experience, with a small, off white head and brilliant clarity. There's a prominent nutty aroma leading the way, alongside… Read more

Smiling Samoyed Saison

Tapped July 19th, 2018
This limited release, housed in 650ml bottles, is a reimagined version of a beer that originally appeared solely on tap>. The founders and brewers of Smiling Samoyed, Simon Dunstone and Kate Henning, found the first version to be too clean even though the ferment temperature reached 35 degrees. Simon discovered the yeast actually loved the heat so he decided to tone the temperature down a little to create some more complex saison esters and, to bolster the flavour even more, dried orange peel… Read more

Smiling Samoyed Coops Copper Ale

Tapped July 19th, 2018
When Kate Henning and Simon Dunstone started Smiling Samoyed brewery, they had three Samoyed dogs. Hence one of their first beers was called 12 Paws, with their pale still retaining that name today. Hoppy the dog still greets guests on arrival at the brewery with a welcoming smile. However, one of their dogs, Cooper, named after the iconic SA brewery, is no longer with them and, in his honour, they brewed this copper ale. Coops pours a bright copper colour with a lingering, white, foamy head. The… Read more

Bodriggy Brewing Cosmic Microwave NEIPA

Tapped July 19th, 2018
Originally launched in May 2018 during Good Beer Week, Cosmic Microwave has returned. This time around, the New England IPA has been given a much wider release, while also being among the first Bodriggy beers brewed at their newly operational Abbotsford brewery. Dressed in a can that invokes images of the history of the universe, its future and a journey beyond reality – not to mention the Wayne Coyne artwork that adorns Flaming Lips releases – the beer is a trip into the haze.
