New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery. We'll do our best to tell you what’s coming when, where it’s going and – where possible – what it tastes like before it goes on sale. Be aware, however, that just because a venue’s getting a beer doesn’t mean they’ve tapped it straight away so maybe check it's pouring first.

Cheeky Monkey & Chicho Gelato & Mane Liquor Frosty Fruit Sour

Tapped November 9th, 2017
For beer drinkers, few things can top the wonderfully zippy refreshment of a cold Berliner Weisse on a hot summer’s day. Those below the nation's drinking age would argue that few things can top the fruity, brain-freeze inducing head rush of a tropical Frosty Fruit either. Frosty Fruit's pre-summer release from this trio of collaborators blends these two warm weather joys into a lightly puckering passionfruit, mandarin and lime gelato infused nostalgia trip that raised plenty of smiles and recalled… Read more

Pirate Life Brewing Port Local Lager

Tapped November 9th, 2017
The Port Admiral Hotel is Port Adelaide’s oldest remaining building, dating back to 1849. Nearly 120 years after first opening its doors, and following a million dollar resurrection, the hotel has started pouring its first beers in more than a decade. The Port Admiral opened the doors on its latest incarnation on November 8, 2017, under the stewardship of a group of owners who come from a variety of backgrounds but all have one thing in common: knowledge of good booze. So, they enlisted another… Read more

Innate Brewers & Clancy's Mango Unchained

Tapped November 9th, 2017
Besides a snappy beer pun - and who doesn’t like those – Mango Unchained has little in common with Tarantino’s 2012 classic. Where the auteur found bloodlust, violence and dark humour, the WA collaborators find a fruity sweetness and sociability, although both have a mischievous undercurrent – the beer is propelled by a creeping 6.3 percent ABV. Clancy’s team members joined In8 head brewer Joel Nash for the brew day of a beer that later had no less than 30kg of fresh mango cheeks from northwest… Read more

Boatrocker & Goose Island October Beer

Tapped November 8th, 2017
Back in May, while in Melbourne for Good Beer Week, the man in charge of overseeing Goose Island's massive barrel program visited Boatrocker Brewers & Distillers's Barrel Room to create a beer. There, Bill Savage and Boatrocker's Matt Houghton settled upon a rarity, an October beer – something of a pre-cursor to barley wines. After all, the thinking went, when you've each got an iconic barrel aged imperial stout in your lineup (Ramjet and Bourbon County Stout), why not do something different? They… Read more

Wheaty Brewing Corps Cutlet

Tapped November 8th, 2017
The choice cuts of a lamb are dependent on personal preference, but there will be few meat lovers who can go past a small, tasty, juicy cutlet. A little chewy but tender at the same time and of a size that you can consume a few in one sitting. Which is a roundabout way of getting to the inspiration for this beer: a pale ale with plenty of juicy hop flavours that's a little meaty too. Oats and specialty malts are among the grain bill, contributing to a substantial body for a beer of just 4.5 percent… Read more

The Wheaty

Wheaty Brewing Corps Milko

Tapped November 8th, 2017
When deciding what sort of sweet stout to brew next, head brewer Jade Flavell drew inspiration from the Old El Paso taco advertisement. She couldn’t decide if she wanted an oatmeal or a milk stout, therefore decided: “Why not both?” The idea was to combine the sweetness from the lactose in a milk stout with the body of an oatmeal stout, bringing in an English ale yeast to finish the job. The Wheatsheaf Hotel has the ability to pour a beer up to three different ways, with standard CO2 carbonation,… Read more

4 Pines Keller Door: Lemon Melon Wit

Tapped November 7th, 2017
Despite the pervasiveness of marketing in general, coupled with consumer desires that can apparently only be sated through the availability of everything all of the time, it still seems strangely surprising when November rolls around, tinsel starts to lines shelves, festive tunes hover in the space above aisles and the campaign for Christmas begins in earnest. If you inhabit the beer world, in recent years, there's been another reliable barometer of the imminence of the festive season: the arrival… Read more

Mornington Peninsula Brewery #tinnage010 Jiffy Squid

Tapped November 7th, 2017
Mornington Peninsula Brewery's #tinnage series of one-off canned releases reaches double figures here as they revisit a beer originally brewed for and with Brisbane's Brewski for Pint of Origin back in March. It was one of the earlier appearances of a NEIPA Down Under, a statement that makes it apparent just how insanely fast they've appeared in the eight months since, with its name a reference to a Tom Waits and Screamin' Jay Hawkins skit. Sailors Grave Spring Farmhouse Ale 2017

Tapped November 6th, 2017
Each season, Sailors Grave puts out a new farmhouse ale showcasing ingredients obtained from other small producers or foraged on their travels. In the case of the 2017 release, it's a bit of column A and a bit of column B. The former comes in the form of High Country bergamot from Mountain Yuzu; the latter is a veritable smorgasbord of wild weeds – nettles, mallow, dandelion, cleavers, milk thistle and borage – collected by co-owner Gab Moore from her garden and the banks of the Snowy River that… Read more

Sailors Grave Squid Vs Whale

Tapped November 6th, 2017
Squid Vs Whale is Sailors Grave's biggest beer to date, so what better way for a nautically themed brewery to mark the occasion than name it after a battle between two of the biggest predators on the planet? Admittedly, at 6.7 percent ABV, it's a long way from challenging for the title of Biggest Beer In Australia but it comes packing plenty of firepower. Subtitled "the hop maelstrom" and described as "the closest to a NEIPA we will get", you can imagine what's on the agenda:… Read more

Endeavour Melba Bitter

Tapped November 6th, 2017
Leaping fast out of the starting gates in order to stay a few lengths ahead of the IP lawyers, Endeavour has released a beer just in time for the Melbourne Cup. Part celebration, part homage and mostly just an opportunity too good to pass up, Melba Bitter was the first new beer made by head brewer JB following the birth of his first child. Black Dog Brewery Estate Hopped Golden Ale

Tapped November 5th, 2017
Clearly, Black Dog brewer James Booth doesn't like having time on his hands. Not only does he brew and package every Black Dog beer and also act as the winemaker on the fourth generation family winery Taminick Cellars, he decided to start growing his own hops a few years back. Black Dog Brewery Belgian Dark Ale

Tapped November 5th, 2017
A bridging beer for spring, this one from Black Dog. It's a Belgian dark ale built with German and Belgian specialty malts, a Belgian yeast strain and hops from rather closer to the brewery's Glenrowan home – the High Country's Ellerslie Hop. It pours an enticing deep ruby chestnut colour and delivers the sort of complexity one looks out for in such Belgian style beers. Two Birds Brewing Passion Victim

Tapped November 5th, 2017
Helped in no small part by the success of Stone & Wood's Pacific Ale, hop derived passionfruit characteristics have, it's fair to say, become rather popular in beer. And, with summer approaching, Two Birds has decided to send its most passionfruity beer out into the world, combining the Galaxy hops that make Pacific Ale what it is with a couple of citrusy, fruit salady US hops (Mosaic and Amarillo) and, just to be sure, some passionfruit puree. Will it ever end? (Hopefully never, cries the growing legion of hazy IPA fans that, as of this weekend, includes me mum.) Yes, time for another NEIPA and another one that comes with a twist. That is possesses the latter should come as little surprise as Dan Dainton is involved; the brewer of the current Champion Australian Craft Beer entered the NEIPA arena with a beer featuring rye and blood orange and here has joined forces with another critically acclaimed brewer, Lachy Crothers of Brisbane's… Read more

Southern Bay Coffee IPA

Tapped November 3rd, 2017
They continue to plough a pretty idiosyncratic furrow with their seasonal releases at Southern Bay. For the Geelong brewery's latest effort, they hooked up with Little Drippa, the largest producer of cold drip coffee in Australia. Instead of talking to them about how to combined their respective passions in a traditional manner – coffee added to a stout or porter – they set about working out whether they could use Little Drippa's goods in conjunction with new hop US blend Fortnight. A meeting of the gypsy brewers this one, although not solely in the beer sense. Alter Ego sees ACT's reigning AIBA Champion Gypsy Brewer Pact hook up with Bellerophon Cold Brew, a business with no café or retail outlet that instead creates its coffee at founder Alex Leech's home. Following a trip to Seattle, where he'd enjoyed some fine coffee beers, Alex got chatting with Pact brewer Kevin Hingston about creating a beer that brought together their respective art forms. Wolf Of The Willows XPA (Cans)

Tapped November 3rd, 2017
Melbourne's Wolf of the Willows was one of the first Australian breweries to release an XPA. Indeed, they launched with the XPA, explaining that for them the style meant: "extra pale in colour with extra hop aroma and flavour". It went on to take top spot in an XPA/session IPA Getting Blind With Crafty tasting soon afterwards too. Young Henrys Summer Hop Ale (Cans)

Tapped November 3rd, 2017
For summer 2016, Young Henrys took one of their original beers, the Hop Ale, and reinvented it for the contemporary market. In that case, it meant lightening up the malt backbone and layering on the fruity hops in hefty amounts. And now they've brought the Summer Hop Ale back and given it the most popular contemporary refresh going: aluminium casing. If you tried the beer last time around, you'll know what to expect. Hobart Brewing Co Smoked Apple Bock & Eisbock

Tapped November 1st, 2017
Hobart Brewing Co has quickly made a name for itself as one of the finer young booze producers on Tasmania. In 2016, they joined forces to make a beer with someone else in that category, Willie Smiths, adding their freshly pressed organic apple juice to a hearty German style bock. The collaboration didn't end there, however, as they also hooked up with the godfathers of Tassie whisky, inviting Lark Distillery to help them smoke some malt. The result was a hearty, rich, sweetly smoky dark lager given… Read more
