New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery. We'll do our best to tell you what’s coming when, where it’s going and – where possible – what it tastes like before it goes on sale. Be aware, however, that just because a venue’s getting a beer doesn’t mean they’ve tapped it straight away so maybe check it's pouring first.

Boatrocker Barrel Aged Quintet

Tapped September 1st, 2017
Why release one barrel aged beer when you can release five at the same time? Given they've got more barrels filled with liquid to play with than any other brewery in Australia, it's a luxury Boatrocker can take – so it has, with all five featuring some quite lovely new look labels. As for the beers themselves, there's Squeezebox, a barrel aged saison that spent up to 12 months in French oak barriques with the addition of Brettanomyces and pediococcus cultures to develop funk and acidity. The barrel… Read more

Temple Brewing Brewer's Choice: Astra AXPA & Bold New World & Half Time

Tapped August 31st, 2017
Brewer's Choice is a new series of one-off, small batch, draught only releases from Temple. The brewers will decide what they want to brew and any venues wanting the beers on tap go straight to the brewing team – well, head brewer Glenn Harrison to be precise – to order them. From the brewer's heads, through their brewery and direct to you, so to speak. They're launching the series with three beers, one of which introduces a new acronym to the local beer world. The Astra AXPA is an "Australian… Read more

Mornington Peninsula Brewery #tinnage009 Mimas Red IPA

Tapped August 30th, 2017
Last winter saw a flurry of limited release #tinnage beers come out of Mornington Peninsula Brewery. This winter, with the small matter of a barrel program kicking off to add to the workload, the jazzily attired cans have been lesser spotted, making this red IPA the first to leave the brewery since the much-loved Brain Squeeze. It's a style that's been appearing with more frequency in the local beer world and here takes its name from the one of the moons of Saturn – apparently the smallest astronomical… Read more

Bad Shepherd The Almighty 2017

Tapped August 29th, 2017
Winter 2016 saw Bad Shepherd debut its biggest beer to date. A year on, The Almighty is no longer their booziest beer – that title now lies with the Russian Imperial Stout released earlier in the year – but we imagine this returning imperial IPA is one that will have had plenty of the brewpub's fans licking their lips with anticipation. Stats wise, it's the same beer: 9.2 percent ABV and no less than a palate-pushing 100 IBU [International Bitterness Units], but we pick up some stone fruit characters… Read more

Red Hill Brewery Dubbel Life

Tapped August 25th, 2017
It's hard not to think: "Uh oh, this could spell trouble" when first spying Red Hill's latest one-off release. The label features a shot of Walter White from Breaking Bad in his overalls front and centre, the sort of move that should catch the eye of the show's fans but perhaps also the people responsible for protecting its copyright. Except, look a little closer, and all is not what it seems. Sure, there's a man with glasses and a beard in yellow overalls in front of a stack of steel tanks,… Read more

Tallboy and Moose Double Coolade & Wee Man's Heavy & Thingy

Tapped August 25th, 2017
The rate at which Tallboy and Moose pumps out new beers from its small, Frankenstein's monster of a brewery is quite remarkable. In just a few weeks between visits, another half a dozen new beers had appeared on tap, with these (along with the imperial stout that came second in our public blind tasting there) the most recent arrivals. Double Coolade is their latest and biggest iteration of a New England style IPA. It's got the cloudy haze, the citrus juice character from Kiwi and American hops Motueka,… Read more

Stockade Brew Co HBA

Tapped August 24th, 2017
If there was an award for unfashionable beer styles, brown ales would be in with a shout for a podium spot. In a world gone mad for hops, there just doesn't seem to be much space right now for the classically malty beers of their ilk. As such, hardly anyone makes them – at least, not in Australia. Yet, as the few that do have proven, when they're good they can be really damn good. It’s into this territory that Stockade wades with its late winter release, the Hoppy Brown Ale. But, as the name… Read more

Stone & Wood and Blair Hayden Forefathers 2017

Tapped August 22nd, 2017
One of the joys of travelling back to see family in the UK in the early years after moving to Australia was making one's way to the local pub and ordering a pint of cask conditioned English pale ale. The contrast between its refreshing subtleties and some of the bolder, highly carbonated craft beers that were starting to become popular Down Under was a welcome pleasure. And, after a few weeks when the palate was crying out for something more ballsy, we knew there would be plenty to do the trick once… Read more

4 Pines In Season IPA 5

Tapped August 22nd, 2017
The 4 Pines series of In Season IPA releases has been going long enough now that Crafty Pint readers are probably well aware of what it entails. In case there are any that aren't, in short, the brewers create a new IPA every few months featuring hops from the most recent harvest, be that north or south of the Equator. Since release number 4, they've also been sending the beer out across Australia in tinnie form. Last time around, it was American hops taking centre stage; this time, they went plundering… Read more

Bright Brewery Smoko 2017

Tapped August 21st, 2017
Smoko is the act of taking a break from work for a smoke. It's also a riverside campsite in Bright in the Victorian High Country. And, back in 2015, Bright Brewery decided to take those concepts and combine them in a beer. And now they've done it again, albeit looking to recreate a campfire experience as opposed to brewing a beer with the characteristics of a durry. They've done so by collating a quartet of smoked malts – beechwood, mesquite, cherrywood and peated – and making them the stars… Read more

3 Ravens & Brisbane Brewing Co Briz Fizz

Tapped August 21st, 2017
Those who've kept a keen eye on all things 3 Ravens and Mash Brewing in recent years will know that their Berliner Weisse series kicked off with a beer called Wizz Fizz. So it shouldn't be too hard to work out what's going on in this collaboration with Brisbane Brewing Co. The beer was brewed by Satoshi from BBCo with the Ravens crew in Thornbury. The idea was to brew something kettle soured but with an aggressive hopping schedule akin to 3 Ravens' Juicy IPA. Thus a golden beer was soured overnight… Read more

Sailors Grave Winter Farmhouse Ale

Tapped August 20th, 2017
It's fair to say Sailors Grave has got off to a pretty unimpeachable start. Not even a year old, the East Gippsland brewery has won admirers for its beers and its artwork while working closely with its home region's producers. However, this could be the moment at which the good work is undone... Sure, the ethos remains the same, with this winter seasonal following in the tradition of its predecessors in combining a farmhouse style ale with foraged ingredients; they've even brought Pinot Noir barrels… Read more

Bright Brewery Stubborn Russian 2017

Tapped August 19th, 2017
The 2016 vintage of Bright's Stubborn Russian Imperial Stout was the first time the brewers had worked with near neighbours Bright Chocolate. Clearly, both parties were happy with the outcome as they got the gang back together for the 2017 release. This time around, the chocolate makers selected Tanzanian cacao nibs and husks, which were added to the mash and then again via a “dry hopping” technique as the beer was maturing. The beer also nudged up a little in potency, moving from 10 to 11 percent… Read more

3 Ravens Wild Ravens Pinot Noir Golden Sour

Tapped August 18th, 2017
The last of the current quartet of Wild Ravens mixed fermentation beers from 3 Ravens is something of a misnomer. It may say Golden in the title but here is a beer that has picked up so much juice from the Kilmore Pinot Noir pomace from Payten & Jones with which it spent time canoodling that it presents more like a sangria or a sparkling red – it possesses a ruby hue and a pinkish, rapidly dissipating head. It's a companion piece of sorts to the Riesling Golden Sour that kicked off this quartet… Read more

Tallboy and Moose & Carwyn Cellars Dark Side Of The Moose

Tapped August 18th, 2017
For the most part since they first opened the doors of their Preston brewpub, Tallboy and Moose have focused on making tight and generally lower ABV beers. That's certainly not the case here. Dark Side Of The Moose is the first imperial stout they have brewed since their We Make Beer days and the biggest beer the pair has brewed full stop. They've been joined by their mates at Carwyn Cellars for this brew too, creating a beer they're calling a "big daddy of an imperial stout". We've yet… Read more

Six String Double Dark Red IPA

Tapped August 17th, 2017
When Six String launched back in 2013, the beer that won them the most beer geek cred was their punchy Dark Red IPA, a style few made at the time with any regularity and one the Central Coasters effectively made their own. Fast forward to IPA Day 2017 and the Six String brewers decided to take their beloved red IPA, run it through the amplifier and crank the dial all the way up to ten. The Double Dark Red IPA has double the malt and triple the hops of the original, making this ten percent ABV and… Read more

Wayward Brewing The Wayward Son & Big Richard

There is no moment in one’s life comparable to the birth of a first child. For the parents, in that instant – consciously or not – everything changes and a once familiar way of life begins a gradual demise, shifting its boundaries to make room for something infinitely more complex, confusing, terrifying and wonderful. It’s a big deal, and it’s worth celebrating. So when one of the parents of a new baby is a brewer, a quite natural thing to mark the occasion is with a special beer. At Wayward,… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Double Sunset (bottles)

Tapped August 17th, 2017
In the winter of 2016, Two Birds released Double Sunset – a souped up take on their Sunset Ale – as a celebration of their twin wins at the Australian International Beer Awards (Champion Brewery and Champion Amber/Dark Ale for the Sunset. The beer proved rather popular and not just with drinkers – it's the in-house favourite of the head brewers too. So now it's back and it's been bottled too. If you're unfamiliar with either Sunset, the original is a well balanced, hoppy red ale and the Double… Read more

Cavalier Brewing Black and Tan

Tapped August 16th, 2017
A black and tan is created by blending a dark beer with a pale one. It's an occasional practice that can be traced back to the UK and one Cavalier decided to bring back as a one-off – at least initially. The combination of their imperial stout with their American style pale ale proved rather popular, however, so they kept doing it and, for winter 2017, decided to bottle it too. Those familiar with the individual beers will know the Imperial Stout is a pretty forceful affair, combining roasted barley… Read more

Wheaty Brewing Corps Booty Blocker Brown

Tapped August 14th, 2017
Since launching a decade ago in 2007, the Adelaide Roller Derby has enjoyed a long connection with the Wheatsheaf Hotel. The venue has supported the league since the beginning, first brewing the Booty Blocker Brown on grand final night in 2014 and continuing to release it at the same time each year since, changing the recipe slightly each time. This malt driven brown pours a medium brown in colour, with a deep red glow when held to the light. Dark chocolate subtly drifts from the glass, some coffee… Read more
