New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Future Mountain Memoria

Tapped September 17th, 2019
Even before they opened the doors to their Reservoir brewery, Future Mountain’s Ian and Shane were busy working with local farmers to get their hands on seasonal fruits for their beers. They were keen to brew for the seasons, finding the right fruit when it was ready and thus bringing beer and its agricultural roots together. They’re not quick to waste any of that bounty either, as Memoria is a testament to using apricots that had already had one beer flow through them. The first was Two Wheeled… Read more

Future Mountain A Million Stars

Tapped September 17th, 2019
A Million Stars was designed during the depths of winter and is a farmhouse beer that even the brightest stars wouldn't shine through. Made with a bouquet of cardamon, black pepper, rosemary, star anise and juniper plus the French hop Aramis, which contributes further spice and some pine. Flavours of lavender and bergamot also come to the fore alongside its roasted, savoury malts and, while it might pour the deepest of browns, it’s dry and slightly light body makes you think it could just as easily… Read more

Moon Dog Barrel-Normal Activity

Tapped September 14th, 2019
Back in early 2019, we spoke to Jason Perrault, a hop breeder from the American Northwest. Towards the end of the interview, he spoke of a new hop variety they were developing that could give barrel-ageing qualities to a beer. The hop doesn't yet have a "proper" name but has started appearing very occasionally in limited release beers here, including an IPA that's just left Ballistic's brewery in Brisbane. Moon Dog got their hands on some of Yakima Chief Hops' HBC 472 too and decided to… Read more

Hop Nation Sweet & Sour Trio

Tapped September 13th, 2019
Their Site Fermentation Project may have become home for their more esoteric sour beers but the Hop Nation team clearly feel there's still a place for beers from that ever-expanding realm to live within their original brand. In the case of the "Sweet & Sour" beers, there's room for three that share much in common: each features a hefty addition of fruit as well as a lick of lactose (the sweet). Taken in the order I opened them, Cobbler is a peach sour inspired by the dessert of the… Read more

Hop Nation Site Fermentation Project Turn The Page

Tapped September 13th, 2019
Turn The Page is another Site release utilising a sour blonde ale base as the launchpad from which to play around with fruit, in this case rhubarb – plus vanilla as the aim is to bring rhubarb and custard to life in beer form. That said, while some of its predecessors have displayed some serious intensity on the sour and acidic front, here's a very different beast. It looks a little like a Bellini, from which rises a sherbet candy like tangy aroma. There's something perfume-esque too, with a sweetness… Read more

Tooborac Axe & Hammer

Tapped September 13th, 2019
When most breweries conceive springtime releases, they tend to favour something lighter, something that anticipates warmer, sunnier times ahead. For Tooborac, they also appear to be looking ahead to such times but have honed in on one particular activity that rises in popularity as the sun starts beating down: BBQing. Axe & Hammer is a "Texas BBQ Smoked American Red Ale" – a mouthful of a style to say and a mouthful of a beer to boot. There's hickory smoked malt and smoked paprika… Read more

Venom Brewing West Bendigo IPA

Tapped September 13th, 2019
At 2019's Bendigo On The Hop, we ran a couple of IPA blind tastings for attendees. As ever with such things, the results varied from session to session; after all, we all have different palates and different tastes. No beer on the lineup attracted such wildly differing opinions among attendees, however, as the West Bendigo IPA from Venom – a collaboration with Bendigo venues The Hop Supply Co and Handle Bar they were launching on the day. It picked up both full marks from some and cutting remarks… Read more

Bad Shepherd The Almighty 2019 & Passionfruit Sour

Tapped September 13th, 2019
The Almighty has long been one of Bad Shepherd's most highly-anticipated seasonal releases and one of their best. And, as it leaves the Cheltenham brewery once more for 2019 – complete with Hop God on the cans – that's the case again. It's another tightly wound IIPA, sitting at just 8.5 percent ABV this year but with 100 IBU of bitterness squeezed in, that's a long way from the hazier, juicier beers that have dominated the IPA landscape in recent times. Golden and pretty clear, there's pineapple,… Read more

Matso's Hard Lemon

Tapped September 13th, 2019
Hard Lemon. It’s brewed but it’s not beer. In fact, it’s one of the biggest commercial success stories of the past twenty years in the US and in the run into the Australian summer, Matso's has debuted what they'll hope could be a game changer for many drinkers. Hard Lemon’s reduced sugar, low gluten and vegan-friendly credentials provide far-reaching appeal, with a flavour profile that may surprise. You can read more about the style in our feature from early 2019 here. After rolling the… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Brew Tang Cans

Tapped September 12th, 2019
A new season brings with it a new lineup of beers – and another punny title – from Two Birds as they launch a trio of beers under the Brew Tang Can moniker. It's a name as colourful as the cans, with the beers resplendent in pinks, reds, greens and yellows. The trio appears chosen with the belief warmer days lie ahead, made up of a summer ale, fruit sour and NEIPA. The first of these, the Sundaze Sippah reminds me a little of Gage Roads' bestseller, Single Fin – a bright yellow pour with rounded… Read more

FogHorn Brewery Young Americans IPA (cans)

Tapped September 12th, 2019
In 2015, the NSW Government made a bizarre decision to remove the last three stations on the Newcastle rail line and replace the service with on-street light rail. While it definitely had nothing to do with opening up a large swathe of prime land for development, there was a lot of uncertainty as to how it would affect local businesses. One thing is for certain, however: the Hype Train never stopped at FogHorn Brewery anyway. Co-owner and head brewer, Shawn Sherlock, knows exactly what he’s about… Read more

Burnley Brewing Helles

Tapped September 12th, 2019
When you return from a holiday that includes some of Europe’s top beer destinations, there’s a few beer styles you really want to sink your teeth into and, largely, it’s those packed with New World hops. But with Burnley Brewing about to launch into their month-long Oktoberfest celebrations, it turns out this beer writer’s first beery writings are instead on a style far closer to those enjoyed during the long hot last days of Germany’s summer. Atomic Beer Project XPA

Tapped September 12th, 2019
The third permanent entry in Atomic Beer Project’s hop exploratory range shows more restraint and approachability than its peers. Indeed, XPA’s breezy pale blue can is indicative of contents that come on more like a lean-bodied summer ale than the beers you'll find at the robust end of the loose XPA style. Hazy sunshine in the glass, Azacca and Vic Secret hops provide tropical touch points, supported by Ekuanot’s light citrus influence, all while keeping bitterness at a lowish 25 IBUs. It's… Read more

Gage Roads Side Track All Day XPA

Tapped September 12th, 2019
They've been getting plenty of practice when it comes to brewing mid-strengths at Gage Roads, what with having to supply ticket holders seated outside Perth Stadium's premium areas with lower ABV variants of their flagship beers since landing that primo deal. And now here's one for their core range, a beer to tuck in alongside their big-selling summer ale Single Fin. With sensibility at heart and a playful can design to boot, Side Track is what you might term a modern mid-strength: a beer that’s… Read more

Blasta & Rocky Ridge Incan Saison

Tapped September 11th, 2019
Flipping the usual collaborative process for Rocky Ridge, the team at Blasta invited the Busselton brewers north to create a little beer magic in Burswood. Adding to the intrigue, the duo used an exotic Marañón Canyon wild cacao yeast to kick off fermentation before finishing with a comparatively straightforward Belgian saison yeast. The backstory of the former yeast from White Labs is quite incredible; it’s derived from the Northern Peruvian white cacao bean, until recently thought to be extinct,… Read more

4 Hearts Brewing Wabbit Saison 2019

Tapped September 11th, 2019
Wabbit Saison began life in 2015 as a way to use wonky carrots that would otherwise go to waste. Using carrots from Queensland local Kalfresh Vegetables, 4 Hearts’ original iteration of the beer was a 6.5 percent ABV Belgian saison that came out almost fluorescent orange, making it perfectly weird for GABS 2015, the festival where it made its debut. Four years on, Wabbit Saison has evolved. Current head brewer Ken Friend specialises in tradi-tional and approachable European styles, and has altered… Read more

4 Hearts Brewing Super Model & Das Meister

Tapped September 11th, 2019
Super Model pale ale uses all Australian ingredients: hops from Tasmania and Victoria, Voyager malts from the Riverina and yeast from Toowoomba… as well as Ipswich water, of course. This mid-strength addition to the 4 Hearts tap lineup (the version I tried was 4.2 percent ABV but it's been revised to 3.5 since) nestles comfortably between the Ipswich Challenger and Limestone Pale Ale. It’s a clean drinker with passionfruit and subtle orange notes, but with none of the hubris you might accumulate… Read more

Pirate Life OG Stout

Tapped September 11th, 2019
When Pirate Life first released a stout in cans, the tallboy tinnie'd Stout, it might have taken a few of the brewery's fans by surprise, in that it took inspiration from the traditional beers of England rather than the hopped up versions that followed in the States. Here, with OG Stout – a beer that's proving popular enough it may transition to a permanent slot in the lineup – it's a similar approach, albeit reined in a little on the booze front. As with an OG stout from England, it's dark,… Read more

Pirate Life Tropical IIPA

Tapped September 11th, 2019
Pirate Life's IIPA might not have been the country's first imperial IPA but its impact in 500ml cans, both in terms of "Wow!" factor and success in competitions both public and industry based, can still be felt, with a series of other brewers following suit and popping such beers into bigger cans than their lower ABV hoppy releases. Here, the SA brewers give their icon a neon-flecked companion piece, albeit in their now standard 355ml cans and at a slightly lower 8 percent ABV. The can… Read more

Pirate Life Boysenberry Dark Sour & NW Pale (Dan Murphy's exclusives)

Tapped September 11th, 2019
You never know when a memory is going to be brought back to life – or indeed what those memories might be. In the case of Pirate Life's Boysenberry Dark Sour – one of two Dan Murphy's exclusives from the brewery in 2019 – it's sitting in the dining room of the Holiday Inn in Dover circa 1985 and ordering the ridiculously sugar-laden soft drink they had on the kids menu; I can't recall the name but it was essentially Coke with blackcurrant cordial in it (what were my parents thinking?).
