New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Nowhereman Noir de Garde

Tapped May 9th, 2019
For their 2019 GABS festival beer Nowhereman opted to follow a dark and wintry path. And then tack on some tasty detours too. Noir de Garde is a Belgian dark ale brewed with Port-soaked dried figs and the addition of oak. Head brewer Eddie Still says: “We started with the idea to brew a dark winter beer and then things got a little out of control; we fell down the rabbit hole of ideas and this is where we ended up.” There's no doubting the beer's Belgian roots, thanks to its big, malty Dubbel… Read more

Helios Brewing Medusa Black IPA (cans)

Tapped May 9th, 2019
Originally brewed for Christmas 2017, Medusa returns as a more seasonally adjusted limited release – after all, crushing black IPAs during a sweltering Brisbane festive break may not be for everyone. Nor, indeed, turning drinkers to stone while gazing at her face as the legend goes – but that’s a risk that many will be happy to take. Initially expecting a dank and bitter bomb, Medusa instead comes on balanced, smooth and roasty. Coffee, milk and dark chocolate lead with enough pine for the… Read more

Noisy Minor Doppelganger

Tapped May 9th, 2019
A massive lager. Who knew?!? Well, plenty of people, of course, but as the lupulin shift carries palates further into bitterness and fruit juice territory, clean, deep malt styles are shown less favour. It’s a flavour game that’s ours to lose, which is a shame, but for now we have Doppelganger, which may or may not have a likeness out there trying to hunt it down and kill it. Six weeks of lagering by the Noisy Minor crew presents initially as malt sweetness from the dark, ruby-coloured beer.… Read more

Fury & Son Scotch Ale 2019

Tapped May 9th, 2019
The Scotch Ale was the first seasonal release from Fury & Son back in winter 2016. It's returned since, with the peated smoke and Islay whisky like character increasing from that debut in the following year's release, while remaining thick, sweet and awash with treacle like flavours underneath. It's been a while since we last made acquaintance with the beer and plenty of others have passed our way in that time but, if memory serves correct, the winter 2019 edition seems to lean even more into… Read more

Bodriggy Brewing Blinker Dark Ale

Tapped May 8th, 2019
Bodriggy Brewing’s eyes appear set towards winter as the Abbotsford brewery releases the Blinker Dark Ale. The beer is inspired by the traditional dark ales of England, though it might be more accurate to say it’s inspired by the pubs those beers are enjoyed in as, in the brewers' words, Blinker is “as comfortable by the pint at the pub as it is by the fireplace paired with a hearty meal.” While it’s not quite as luscious or sweet as many stouts out there, there is a clear rich chocolate… Read more

Red Duck Super Normal Lager & Passionfruit Kettle Sour Saison & Ulysses

Tapped May 8th, 2019
Red Duck have never been shy when it comes to exploring different beer styles from across both the world and history and this trio of releases from the Ballarat brewery sees them doing exactly that. After all, what could be more fitting in a beer world moving in so many different directions at once than releasing a lager, a kettle sour and a dry Irish stout all in cans at the same time? The first of those, Super Normal Lager, lives up to its name: an everyday, garden variety lager. There are some… Read more

Little Bang Brewing Scratchy Vinyl

Tapped May 5th, 2019
The annual Record Store Day is a big deal, with pop-up stores appearing in venues across the country and, in 2017, the Little Bang guys decided the day needed its own beer; hence Scratchy Vinyl was composed. The recipe for their 6 percent ABV Black IPA took a bit of tinkering to ensure it suited owners Ryan and Fil’s taste buds, neither of whom had previously been a big fan of the style. They wanted a Black IPA that went easier on the roast and pine characters and heavier on the fruity, floral… Read more

Black Arts Golden Wild Ale

Tapped May 4th, 2019
The aim of the first two Black Arts beers is to create a happy medium between the delicate Belgian wild and mixed ferment styles, and the intensely sour and acidic American versions. The duo behind the beer, Michael Leslie and Joshua Murnane, met as homebrewers in 2014 and since then have been collecting wild yeast, bottle dregs and commercial cultures. Then, in 2016, they began ageing beer with the aim of creating Black Arts. The Golden Wild Ale looks to the granddaddy of gueuze, Cantillon Gueuze,… Read more

Black Arts Red Wild Ale

Tapped May 4th, 2019
This Red Wild Ale was one of two beers with which Williamstown-based Black Arts chose to announce themselves to the world. Like its stablemate, the Golden Wild Ale, it's a beer that looks to bridge the divide between delicate Belgian wild and mixed ferment styles and more intensely sour and acidic American versions. Where the Golden looks to the lambics of Belgian’s Senne Valley, the Red Wild Ale has its heart in the Flanders region of the same country, specifically the iconic Rodenbach. You’ll… Read more

4 Pines Keller Door: Honey Imperial Stout

Tapped May 3rd, 2019
Fans of 4 Pines’ Keller Door releases may recall the Black Box of Dark Ales from a few years back, consisting of four different beers brewed with dark malts. As winter 2019 approaches, they’ve brought back one of the most popular of the four: the Imperial Stout, but this time with an interesting twist. Inspired by the tale of a honey stout produced by the old Brookvale Brewing Company, once housed just down the road from 4 Pines’ current headquarters, the ever-experimental brewers combined… Read more

La Sirène Cuvée de Bois 2018

Tapped May 3rd, 2019
Late in 2017, La Sirène released their first Cuvée de Bois. It was a beer with such an involved genesis our write up ended up a little like a mini-thesis. The beer has returned in autumn 2019: still a beer-wine hybrid featuring free run juice and whole bunches of chardonnay grapes from the Geelong region, still a mixed fermentation farmhouse ale and still a Solera style blend of various French oak-aged barriques of the brewery's OG Saison. Yet, while the debut was one best appreciated by palates… Read more

Bright Tank Assalted Passionfruit Gose & Troppo Season Double NEIPA

Tapped May 3rd, 2019
April has been a busy month for Bright Tank with cans flying out of the East Perth brewery at a rate of knots. Among them is the Assalted Passionfruit Gose, brewed in collaboration with Rocky Ridge (well, there is a y in the day) and featuring fresh passionfruit purée in the fermenter and a healthy dose of black Himalayan salt to boot. As you'd expect, the beer is a thirst-quencher ideal for warmer weather – so it's lucky Perth is experiencing a later winter this year – in which salty and sour… Read more

Prickly Moses Harvest Ale 2019

Tapped May 2nd, 2019
Luke Scott has had fun with wet hop beers over his time at Prickly Moses, once taking a team to pull down a ute-full of hop bines of unknown variety that were growing wild in a field not far from their brewery home. For the 2019 Harvest Ale, he's taken a more traditional route, however, getting his hands on 30kg of fresh green flowers from Hop Products Australia – opting for Ella, one of the grower's lesser-hyped varieties. As is often the case with fresh hop beers, the Harvest Ale is perhaps best… Read more

Hargreaves Hill Beatnik Hazy Pale

Tapped May 2nd, 2019
The second release from Hargreaves Hill's canned offshoot Beatnik continues along the path trodden by the first. Whereas the OG brewery typically favours exploring classical beer styles, the child is more about current trends, with this hazy pale ale following an XPA. It lands at the hazy rather than opaque end of the clarity (or lack of) scale and is as pale as its stablemate. Aroma wise, you've got citrus of the lemon/grapefruit ilk on the one hand, a touch of the dank on the other, while there's… Read more

Hargreaves Hill Babooshka Vanilla Milk Stout

Tapped May 2nd, 2019
Well I never. A Hargreaves Hill beer in a can. Having tested the waters with the Beatnik beers, here's the first tinnie bearing the Yarra Valley brewery's name. It adorns 440ml cans of a beer that initially appeared as a very short, draught-only run in 2018 when Hargreaves Hill took over the very many taps at the Mt Macedon Hotel for a special event. Babooshka is a vanilla milk stout whose arrival is rather timely, not just because we're heading into winter but also because we're in the midst of… Read more

Endeavour OPT Porter & Hazy Wet Hop IPA & Voyager Amber Ale

Tapped May 2nd, 2019
There’s a distinctly European vibe to these releases that hit tap at the Endeavor Tap Rooms in The Rocks in quick succession. And, given the aesthetics of the brand, the venue’s location in the colonial heart of Australia and the cooling weather, it all feels very fitting. It’s remarkable given almost all the ingredients are Australian and Aussies decided a long time ago that European beers are not and will never be cool. Quite frankly, it’s a disgrace. First up is the OPT Porter. Named for… Read more

Burnley Brewing Blackcurrant Gose

Tapped May 2nd, 2019
When Swedish punks Millencolin toured Australia in March, the band’s frontman Nikola Šarcevic made sure to put down a few collaboration brews between performing sellout shows. Aside from being one of Sweden’s top musical exports, Nikola also runs Wizard Brewing and Mikrofonbryggeriet – and you can read more about that side of his colourful life here. In particular, Nikola is into brewing fruit-filled kettle sours, as he did with Old Wives Ales to create Sommar Sour, and hazy IPAs. When the… Read more

Eumundi Brewery Tiny XPA

Tapped May 1st, 2019
What do you call a hazy, five percent ABV pale ale that’s been generously dry-hopped with New World hops? Is it an XPA? A New World Pale Ale? A New England Pale Ale? Toying with styles and style names is all fun and games until someone gets confused. (That “someone” being me. I’m easily confused.) Perhaps I’m overthinking it; it tastes delicious, and Eumundi’s happy calling it an XPA, so let’s go with that. As with the Pale Ale, some of the familiar Galaxy aromatics are there, but they’re… Read more

The Mill Brewery Freshest Haze IPA

Tapped April 30th, 2019
The Mill in Collingwood is one of a handful of mainland breweries to have taken part in the annual Fresh Hop Beer Festival in Launceston, Saint John Craft Beer's celebration of the annual hop harvest. The 2019 festival was their second visit and saw them take an equally hazy approach to the previous year, albeit with a few tweaks – namely, more hops in both whirlpool and at the dry-hopping stage plus more booze. They might not have been the biggest of changes, but clearly they worked as Freshest… Read more

Moo Brew Fresh Hop Lager 2019

Tapped April 30th, 2019
Moo Brew’s head brewer and general manager Dave Macgill loves Enigma hops. Those are his words but you could probably work it out even if you’d never met him. After all, back in 2015, the brewery’s first ever can release was Single Hop, an ale made entirely with Tasmanian grown Enigma and Tasmanian malt. So, when it came time for Moo to brew a beer for Launceston’s Fresh Hop Beer Festival in 2019, Enigma was always the likely choice – not only is it a favourite of Dave’s but it’s… Read more
