The Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s saw people leave the country en masse to seek better fortunes elsewhere, and a large number (at least by regional Australian standards) ended up putting down roots in Koroit in Victoria's west. Almost two centuries later, the Irish presence in the town is celebrated each year with a festival that attracts thousands of visitors. For the 2023 event, local brewers Noodledoof have put out a pair of beers with such festivities in mind.
Both come in cans with a nitro injection, with Irish Red Ale pouring with the ruddy hue of a table found in a stately home. Soft, toasted, biscuity malts rub up against a broad and gentle bitterness that attempts to dry things out but faces an uphill battle against the nitro-enhanced creamy sweetness.
Its companion piece is an Irish Stout that's just as soft in texture once the can has been shaken, poured hard into your glass and allowed to settle. It leans into dark chocolate territory more than anything roasty or bitter, with a sweetness that almost feels like a dash of vanilla as been swirled in its midst. Sláinte!
