The Barrel Farm by Blackman’s has delivered some Dark Barrelled Funk for winter and it's a beer that melds the old and the new. The "new" is a dark kettle sour and the "old" comes courtesy of a porter that spent two years aging away in gin barrels from Bellarine's Teddy & The Fox.
The two were blended together to create a dark beer that's funky and tart, with ripe fruit flavours that sit somewhere between plum and cherry. Those are joined by floral, botanical and oaky vanilla elements from that porter's time ageing away, with the maltier side of Dark Barrelled Funk bringing dark chocolate, roasted nuts and a touch of sweetness that balances against the soft sourness. For me, it brought to mind some kind of fruited, chocolate cake similar to black chocolate gateau but at the same time, entirely different.
I must find out what this cake is, or invent it by spring.
