Blackman's Brewery have spent years championing beer freshness via their Same Day IPA series and highlighting hops through their Needs More beers (which were a particularly exciting part of COVID's lockdowns). Following 2024's hop harvest, they've partnered up with Hop Products Australia's to take each concept to the nth degree with Needs More Enigma. The beer makes use of the year's freshest crop of Enigma and was packaged in the very early hours of April 12 before being delivered into bars and bottleshops across Victoria that very same day.
It's an exhausting experience for the Blackman's crew but offers quite a delight for beer drinkers across Victoria and means they can grab a can with the full knowledge that few things in life are as current. Speaking of currants (with an A over E), there are quite pronounced redcurrant and more lolly-like berry notes to be found while white grape and lime both play a staring role too. Given the hop's name, it should be no surprise there's something of a twist along the way with an otherwise quite lean IPA trending into juicy territory courtesy of a tropical hit of rockmelon and a softer side of peach.
