Philter have once again reminded drinkers they make some stellar beers, taking home Best Modern India Pale Ale for Haze and Consistency of Excellence awards for both their IIPA and XPA at the 2023 Australian International Beer Awards. And they're back with two very different styles they'll hope can become future award contenders.
There's still a few moments to go until we are officially in winter (depending on when you're ready this), but I for one refuse to act like it’s anything but a session-worthy day as long as the sun is shining. Japanese rice lagers can be perfect beers for such occasions, and that's what you've got with Super Cool Lager. It pours golden like sunshine, clear enough to see you're about to make excellent decisions with this beer, and a frothy head reminiscent of Nomihodai beer machines in Tokyo, where head is added to your glass at the end of the pour from a separate tank (IYKYK). Clean, dry aromas will get the tongue salivating, while a super malty yet dry taste leaves you with a super drinkable beer that should have you playing right into what Philter wants: a super session. What else can you say? It’s a super cool lager.
But back to the winter-is-coming end of things and we have Extra Stout, an ode to Irish stout destined to have you chirping: “What’s the craic?” to your Irish friends in no time. Pouring smooth and rich as Irish charm, aromas of coffee and dark chocolate bring comfort, while an espresso crema like finish finds any bitterness from coffee met by a dry finish. It's an easy-drinking stout that could have even the most devout of lager drinkers reaching for another sip as they question their previous opinions on dark beers.
