Good Land Brewing’s home might be Traralgon but the Victorian brewery shares a close bond with the Netherlands. Before opening in 2021, Jimmy Krekelberg was making beer in the land his family hails from, landing a job at De Molen Brouwerij. It’s a place with a fierce reputation for brewing big stouts and not only did Jimmy pick up a knack for those beers but, in homage to that country, Good Land's own big, dark beers have been given Dutch names.
Fittingly, Gezellig translates to cosy, which feels like how you should think about enjoying an 11.4 percent ABV bourbon barrel-aged stout. It was brewed for Good Land’s first birthday celebrations at the end of July and it would certainly be a cosy accompaniment to a Gippsland winter evening, given it's filled with flavours of rich chocolate fudge, caramel, oaky tannins, burnt sugar and dark fruit.
Jazeker, meanwhile, is a follow-up to a beer of the same name from late 2021, with part of that beer set aside to age in Buffalo Trace barrels. It was also released as part of Carwyn Cellars’ Black Box and like the original, the initial flavour is one of really intense espresso which then shares the stage with dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted barley and a further touch of bourbon before a dry finish kicks in.
