Each winter, Slipstream brew up their Mocha Stout with coffee beans from a local roaster. This year’s stout contains coffee from Almanac Coffee Roasters, a little Brisbane roaster putting out some excellent specialty beans.
Give a hearty pour and Mocha Stout will treat you with a thick brown head, but in time it drifts away to leave the stout looking like a glass of cold brew coffee. But that’s fair enough, considering this beer is is all about the long, smooth coffee taste. There’s some sweetness, and the cacao nibs blend seamlessly with the dark malts… but it’s the coffee that really shines. At least until the finish, where the bitterness somehow straddles roastiness, cocoa, and espresso.
At their brewery venue in Yeerongpilly, Slipstream have let this stout spread across their menu – a beerspresso martini on the drinks list, and an Almanac coffee mocha brownie on the dessert menu – and recommend you enjoy it beneath their new heaters until winter is over.
But I can confirm that it’s equally enjoyable to drink snuggled up on your couch at home.
