Bad Shepherd’s Brew Crew series has hit yet another milestone with this Doppelbock the 21st such release. If you missed numbers one to 20, it’s a series that sees the brewery hand over the keys of the brewhouse to a member of staff to let them make whatever they want. This time, they haven’t strayed too far from the production floor, though, with the keys handed to one of their brewers, Dahlen.
Doppelbocks feel like a brewer’s beer too, with the strong dark lager difficult to perfect but even harder to sell in the Australian craft market. Having snuck past any sales or marketing department, this classic German lager pours a copper colour and brings a mix of toffee, figs and brioche. Although it's rich, it’s a long way from being overtly sweet and is instead balanced out by a dry finish and finely-tuned bitterness.
