Bad Shepherd’s kitchen is one inspired by classic American barbecue, where low-and-slow cuts of meat are designed to be shared and passed across the table. It’s the kind of food that also pairs wonderfully with a pretty broad mix of beer styles, but the brewery’s limited-release American Red feels like it’s particularly perfectly suited.
The red ale is filled with chewy caramel flavours, burnt sugar and roasted toffee which are balanced by tropical hops, pine and a floral touch thanks to Pahto, Galaxy, Citra Cryo and Centennial. It’s also just bitter enough to dry out the palate and balance not just the beer's own sweet sweet side but some lamb ribs or a hearty slice of beef brisket too.
