Until the point when someone works out how to distil a Sherrin into liquid form, nothing tastes quite as good during a Melbourne winter as coffee and beer combined. The cold and damp weather demands it and Bad Shepherd have offered a reprieve by the name of Espresso Martini. The beer takes a dark lager and pairs it with Crompton Road Blend from the much-loved Five Senses Coffee who, like the brewery, have a home in Cheltenham.
That blend seems wonderfully fruit forward and therefore provides loads of cherry and dark plum to match the dark beer’s underlying chocolate, roasted and somewhat biscuity tones. As a lager, it’s suitably easy going, drinkable and dry and yet there’s a lasting creaminess at play which takes the beer from coffee and into espresso martini. Better yet, you can order eight at a bar and not feel like you’re holding up the line (if you don’t feel like you’re doing this, you’re the problem)
