For autumn 2023, Molly Rose have brought back a couple of old favourites in time for a season of heavy coats. Or, in the case of Scarf Weather, it’s more about the accessories, with the spiced amber ale a collaboration with Blackhearts & Sparrows. The beer’s made with fresh oranges, cinnamon and ginger to provide maximum levels of cosiness, while citrussy hops deliver extra fruit flavours. That melange of spice, fruit and the biscuity malt flavours bring to mind Christmas cake that’s served with candied orange and although spending blistering Australian Christmas Days enjoying such treats has broken my brain and makes me think of summer, they're really better suited for this time of year aren't they?
Kuro meanwhile, is a longstanding Japanese dark lager that appeared in brewery founder Nic Sandery’s mind as he enjoyed the country’s cuisine. It was one of the brewery’s first three beers and this new iteration was brewed with Mountain Ash Smoked Malt from Voyager plus the seaweed kombu which appears in countless Japanese dishes. It means the beer is led by umami with layers of smoke akin to what you’d find in a peaty whiskey while the lager lurking beneath has its own web of dark chocolate and leanness to make Kuro a journey of both deliciousness and balance.
