There’s been plenty of discussion in craft beer about the Lager Renaissance but are we about to see brewers and beer drinkers embrace Kolsch? The German style where ale yeast is fermented cold was a common sight in many brewery’s core ranges in the early-to-mid 2010s but they’ve since largely faded from view.
Molly Rose are backing the style with Kolsch #1, with the name a pretty good indicator that they’re eager to be a part of any new era of Kolsch. The beer spent a month cold conditioning and the result is a crystal clear, golden beer that’s incredibly moreish thanks to its substantial bitterness and dry finish. While they say kolsch is best enjoyed in the shadow of Cologne Cathedral, crack into the can and the freshly-baked bread, dry cracker, gentle herbal and fruit notes all feel as traditional as life gets.
