When you’re brewing a hoppy beer and wondering what fruit to add, passionfruit feels like a bit of a fail-safe. After all, Galaxy is a hop that tends to take the mind right there, so how can more of the fruit do any harm? Bonehead Brewing’s Fail Safe certainly has it in spades, with the hazy pale featuring passionfruit nectar alongside Galaxy and New Zealand’s Nectaron. That additional fruit adds a heavy layer of juiciness to the beer and brings a slight tartness and zest you’re more likely to find at the bottom of a glass of tropical juice than in a pale ale. But Fail Safe isn’t just about that passionfruit with a layer of stone fruit joining the soft, lush and all-around easy drinker.
Speaking of hops, Dry Hopder has plenty of its own, with the triple-dry-hopped IPA a tribute to one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time, Die Harder. Here, those hops are explosive as that firey scene towards the film’s end*, with juicy stone fruit, peach, apricot and a fruit bowl filled with tropical fruits all standing as tall as Jon McClane’s Hairline.
