In an admission which is likely to outrage many, not least Bright Tank’s owner Matty Moore, I know nothing about Red Dwarf. Each year, the East Perth brewery’s ode to the BBC's cult comedy sci-fi series – one of the most successful series of all time for the Beeb – fails to connect with me. Nonetheless, I’m happy that another edition of this red IIPA exists in our galaxy, not three million years from earth with a hologram, cat and a bloke who's enjoyed a far longer career as a respected funk and soul DJ.
Being a beer publication, albeit one lavish with pop culture, film and music references, there is liquid to appraise, which here arrives with an appealing burnt caramel nose, flickering with spicy hints. In the glass, a malty affair rides with raisin bread, mellow marmalade and a subtle dank undertow. Yet this isn’t a treacle-tinged RIIPA, instead 2022’s BRSH's initial chewiness soon charts a far drier path, one which elevates bitterness and prickly warmth.
Whether or not it's suitable for pairing with smoked kippers we'll leave up to you. [Hope that works as a Red Dwarf reference for you, Guy – Editor]
