You may have first tried it at GABS and it has all the hallmarks of a GABS taster but Twist & Stout is a Dainton beer that, well, is pretty typical for the kind of limited releases that fly from the Melbourne brewery. The choc pretzel stout has been released for May 2021 and aims to provide equal measures of sweetness and saltiness – and it's probably best to think of it as a dessert beer suited to an after lunch snack rather than a pre-bedtime indulgence.
For while it is indeed thick and rich, Twist & Stout keeps a level of balance to stop it being quite heavy enough to require a post-consumption nap. The brewers call it "deliciously distorted" and distorted is probably the keyword to understanding the beer. The sweetness and saltiness are present in such equal measures that drinking it creates a bit of confusion for the ol' tastebuds where it feels like half your mouth is enjoying the rich, chocolate mousse flavours while the other half is satisfied by the hit from the drying, biscuit flavours of a freshly-baked pretzel. Both swirl through the dark beer at once without being overpowering and, just as you feel you've had enough chocolate, Twist & Stout's salty edge hits to ensure it makes you thirsty
