If the early 2020s was defined by seemingly unlimited limited releases, then 2023 has shaped up as the year of sessionable fridge fillers – or "budget busters" as we called them in our blind tasting. This low 4 percent ABV bracket has become a space occupied by a growing number of brewers for obvious reasons.
It’s no secret people have tightened their spending while many still want to enjoy good beer and support local. Into this space steps Mismatch Draught, a self-confessed simple beer, reiterated through the associated marketing slogans: "Some Days Are for Craft. Others Are for Draught" and "Refreshingly Ordinary."
It's been in the pipeline for some time now, arriving just ahead of summer 2023/24 in a retro style tin [that echoes another beer in this space: Bodriggy's Stingrays Draught – Editor], complete with the familiar Mismatch M front and centre.
And a simple beer it is. Simple without skimping on classic craft lager qualities. A medium body leads the way – not watery and thin but not heavy either – while bready, biscuit malts meet a touch of honey, leading into a crisp dry finish. The bitterness is non-existent, aiding its sessionable fridge-filler credentials.
