After successive releases exploring pastry stouts, dark sours and turning beer into rum & cola, Reckless Brewing have gone a little more traditional. Having said that, their Baltic Porter might be based on the historic Euro style, but it has a few Bathurst-brewed twists.
For one, the dark beer nudges the upper echelon of where the dark lager style sits, with the 10.5 percent ABV bringing touch of warmth and a boozy sweetness. It’s a combination that blends seamlessly with rich lashing of toffee, chocolate and raisin and adding to Baltic’s decadence is a lush body brought by oat malts. Speaking of malt, the manuka-smoked variety that was added takes you to a campfire while enjoying umami-laden food and makes Baltic Porter a wonderful journey to drink. Better yet, if you’d like to see where that voyage goes next, there may or may not already be some of the beer ageing in barrels.
