As part of Good Beer Week, Tallboy & Moose invited some of their brewing mates to their Preston brewpub home to showcase beers brewed with native ingredients. It feels like a naturally Tallboy event, with the brewery long having explored left-of-centre ingredients and their 2022 GABS beer a wattleseed amber lager made with an Indigenous artist, Kevin Williams.
Following the event, they’ve released two beers that are quite classic in form while still being entirely unique. The Yabby Dabba-Doo name likely gives away the ending too, with the crustacean-ified dark beer a twist on oyster stouts that swaps those shells for freshwater yabbies. It's a rich and chocolatey treat, with nutty characters, a significant malty flavour (as in, Milo, over the actual ingredient) and an underlying salinity.
Ursa Minor meanwhile, is an amber ale with lemon aspen. It features Munic, Red X and Melanoidin malts that provide rich toffee and caramel while a nuttiness and decent bitterness plays a balancing role against any sweetness. With a name like “lemon” aspen, I was expected to find a whole lot of, well, lemon, but instead, it was more akin to grapefruit with candied tropical tones too.
If you’d like to try them both together, the brewery has Savour Native Flavour packs featuring four of each.
