Brewers have made a habit of using past GABS festivals as an excuse to play around with contrasting or clashing style descriptions, such as sub-2 percent ABV triple IPAs, and for the 2023 Australian Invitational Pack Big Shed veer into that territory too – if just a little. Quantum Gravity takes the essence of a West Coast IPA, the sort of beer they've been making since their early days – often with plenty to chew into – but slimming it down into session-friendly territory.
It serves up familiar US hop characteristics – mainly of the newer, tropi-berry ilk – but with caramel malts and hints of something more earthy / piney providing memories of WCIPAs of yore. Aromatically and flavour wise, there's plenty that says West Coast in there, and a drying bitterness too, with the lighter body the main giveaway it sits more in pale ale territory.
