Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like a straight strawberry smoothie is one of those things that’s a bit too flashy to make yourself at home. The kind of drink you’d happily order at Boost Juice, but if you tried making one for breakfast at home you’d chicken out and add a heap of banana to fill up the blender.
Anyway, Green Beacon hasn’t chickened out: this is distinctly strawberryish beer.
The colour isn’t quite as pink as the can’s label, but imagine apricot nectar with a dash of pink and you’re in the ballpark. Yet take a whiff and it’s strawberry all the way. More specifically, it smells like strawberry ice cream dusted with strawberry jelly crystals: sweet and creamy and zingy all at the same time. All this strawberryness continues into the mouth but there it’s surprisingly smooth, with the lactose giving both a silky body and a sweetness that completely balances out the tartness.
Just a heads up that this beer’s a bit stronger in can than it is on tap at the brewpub (5.0 percent ABV in can, while 4.4 at the brewpub). Not a huge difference, but enough that you’d notice it after a few.
