This year’s Scrimshaw seasonal release from Green Beacon is more restrained than in previous years. With the punchy Windjammer in the core range, and bangers like Whaler Blood Orange IPA, Red’s Dead Red IPA and Uppercut IIPA showing up at various times in recent months, this clean and refreshing Australian IPA provides an easy-drinking counterbalance to some of those hop explosions.
The 2018 Scrimshaw is cloudy in the glass, and the nose is full of pineapple (which is far less uncomfortable than it sounds). In the mouth, though, pineapple becomes the passenger, with passionfruit in the driver’s seat, and biscuit and bread chattering quietly in the back seat. The bitterness takes a while to show up, but does eventually come along for the ride too.
