With eleven stores and another set to open before the end of the year, Blackhearts & Sparrows are getting craft beer (not to mention fine wine and spirits) into a lot of hands. As the business has grown, they’ve also looked to collaborate with more of the producers they stock, offering their staff a chance to understand what goes into the bottles and cans on their shelves. The latest of those collaborations is with Stomping Ground, giving the bottleshop’s Gore Street head office the chance to wander down to the Gipps Street brewery.
The result is Bramble On, a malt forward sour featuring a mix of blackberries, raspberries and silvanberries (we hadn’t heard of them either but, as far as we can tell, they’re pretty much blackberries). Pouring a deep and cloudy red, like the beers in Stomping Ground’s Smash series, the brewery have managed to let the fruit shine through. Beyond the berry mix, there’s a creaminess thanks to the oats in the malt bill, while it finishes with a tart bite.
