One of the first beers put through the brewery at Stomping Ground – months before the venue was ready to open – was a Berliner Weisse. The acidic, low ABV style that originates in Germany has become increasingly popular in Australia in recent years and, with theirs, Stomping Ground is looking to be as faithful to the originals as possible.
In the few places where you still find Berliner Weisse being brewed and poured in Germany, you would typically be offered a syrup to add to the base beer. So that's what they're doing at the Gipps St venue with the beer honouring Nick Cave and his band. The base beer is light and delicate on the palate, with a gently sour and cleansing acidity; you can choose to have it straight or with a dash of woodruff (as in the photo here), red cherry or blackcurrant.
