To quote Ronald Reagan's 1984 presidential campaign, there's a bear in the woods. Once again, that High Country bear is Bright Brewery's longstanding imperial stout named Stubborn. For 2024, the beer was made with the addition of rye overall, it brings a web of delightfully rich and syrupy tones.
At 12.0 percent, it's an incredibly viscious and somewhat sticky affair, almost like the final beer is some kind of reduction, and there's plenty of chocolate, caramel and treacle to be found. As it warms, that rye brings forward a more earthy spice while there's always hints of espresso that carry through the beer's smooth, textural mouthfeel. In other words, it's perfect for a cold night and few nights are as cold as Bright Brewery's Darker Days festival, which tickets are still available for at the time of writing.
