Le Monstres Du Château have once again emerged from their manors, with the Bright Brewery and Carwyn Cellars’ collaboration taking us on a dark journey into barrel ageing with French oak. You can read about entries number two and three here, and for the end of winter 2024, we’re once again treated to some wood you don’t often find in the beer world. That's particularly true of number three in the series which brings us mummified remains of Madeira; a fortified wine that comes from the Portuguese-controlled islands off the coast of Africa. It’s certainly a distinct beer too, thanks to its heavy tones of plum and raisins that taste less like the flavour compound you’d find in a fortified and more like those squishy little things have spent days ageing in the actual bottle. Continue to unwrap the 11.0 percent ABV number and you’ll also find licorice, Christmas pudding, and dark and bitter chocolate (we’re talking Lindt up to 95 percent).
Number four, meanwhile, spent its time in Caribbean Rum and despite the terrifying Chupacabra on the can, comes across as a little lighter on its feet. Largely, that’s thanks to a significant layer of banana and softer tones of coconut that blend into vanilla and a smooth chocolate that’s akin to a hot choccy.
