You may have noticed - and hopefully you’ve enjoyed - a lager trend sweeping these shores: West Coast Pilsners. What does it all mean? Well, it’s a style we’re about to dive into more deeply but essentially, it sees the brewers take the European tradition of a pilsner (such as the crispness, mouthfeel and overall clean characters) and merge it with the kind of hops that are typically the domain of a West Coast IPA.
Does it make the beer more of a lager or an IPA? And couldn't they just be IPLs by another name? It might be confusing ground but arguably it's in the murky world between styles where you find the most creativity and Bridge Road Brewers have embraced it as part of their ongoing series exploring all things IPA. Their West Coast Pilsner certainly hits all the right notes too, with Mosaic, Cascade and Centennial providing a fulsome combiantion of citrus, mango, pine and resin. Tying those hop notes together are bready and dry cracker malt characters while a clean, dry and bitter side departs America's West Coast for central Europe.
