Fear not, saison fans: Sobremesa Fermentary & Blendary haven’t broken your hearts by making a stunning pivot into Hard Solo territory. Instead, Sunday Lemonade is a mixed culture grisette that was made with a blend of saison yeast and three strains of Brettanomyces from Mogwai Lab. As the release in cans, rather than their usual big format bottles, from the tiny Melbourne outfit suggests, this is a beer built for long afternoons in the sun, with the funky release filled with gooseberry, ripe lemon, honeydew and freshly-baked bread. If you can imagine a sauvignon blanc mixed with a classic saison, then you’re on the right track (which seems like a far better mix of booze than soft drink and vodka).
False Narrative, meanwhile, is a farmhouse IPA that was brewed with Boomstick Glassware. Open fermented in three different barrels with a blend of kveik yeast strains, the collaborators then added some strains of Brett and let the beer mature for five-and-a-half months in barrel. After all that, it was dry-hopped with Citra and Azacca from the US to make a beer that’s (figuratively) filled to the brim with citrus.
We found bitter Seville orange, lemon peel and orange that’s a little like juice and a lot like lollies, while tying it all together is a touch of acid, gentle bitterness and the kind of carbonation that feels a little like a dream.
