A warlock is a male practitioner of witchcraft, something that has allegedly been performed in the Uraidla area over the centuries, and which has infused the naming protocol of the brewery of the same name since it launched. And Warlock’s Wisdom is no different. Indeed, it goes beyond the mere name in this case: it's rumoured warlocks passed this West Coast IIPA recipe through family lines only for it to be recreated in 2023 with modern hops and yeast.
So, what of the wisdom that has been honed over generations into a double West Coast IPA featuring a smattering of specialty malts and a stack of American hops from various crafty eras: Chinook, Cryo Centennial, Cryo Mosaic and Strata?
Pouring a lovely deep golden colour, Warlock’s Wisdom showcases loads of classical West Coast vibes in what's undoubtedly a big beer. Sweet, sticky, chewy, toffee malts lay the base for the hops to go to work upon, bringing pine, pine and more pine initially, with a touch of orange and grapefruit citrus. That sweetness comes up against a refined but noticeable bitterness before drying out just a little, albeit still finishing in a manner that suggests warlocks like their IIPAs on the sticky side.
