Now in its fourth year, Gage Roads’ International Women’s Day release once again celebrates women in beer with proceeds from the beer's funding a Pink Boots Australia $10K scholarship program. This year’s all-female brewing team have drawn from the WA native Geraldton Wax – part of the myrtle family – in creating their Sunset State "WA IPA".
As Gage Roads Fremantle’s head brewer Simone Clements explains: "Jambinu Zest Geraldton Wax is a West Australian native plant and has a great citrus flavour.”
Those expecting a full-blown West Coaster will instead find a far more delicate IPA, one leading with a subtle floral, almost honeyed nose. Sunset State also features Citra and Amarillo hops that play supporting roles, with the wreathed flower’s impact primarily contributing a waxy quality which doesn’t go full-Fiano, rather adding a curious feel which ebbs through the beer's dry close.
