At the tail-end of the 80s. surf culture began looking beyond its norms for innovation. Some had previously been toying with flight, but it wasn’t until a young surfer named Christian Fletcher borrowed moves from skateboarding’s repertoire with such confidence and flair that a new epoch was apparent. Taking to the sky from a Lower Trestles, San Diego wave at 1989’s Body Glove Surfbout, Fletcher changed the course of surfing, and claimed first prize in the process.
Gage Roads have more modest aims with their Air Time. That said, the growth of the "health aware drinker" over the past 20 years of low carb Australian brewing does call for quiet innovation, as is the case here with this straightforward lager replacing the outgoing Pipe Dreams.
In keeping with the easy, breezy mood, Air Time finds light cereal malt, faint citrus and spice tones courtesy of Saaz and Hersbrucker hops, and casual sipping at its bantam core. Almost bereft of bitterness, the dry finish, through a fine soda-like bead, cleanses the palate, all of which lands at 99 calories and one standard drink per 330ml can.
