In this continuation of one of my favourite limited release series of 2022, 7th Day Brewery have kicked off Making Waves for 2023 as they ended last year: with a fruity sour. The fruits in question are blueberry and yuzu, combining in a beer named after the Greek goddess of earth: Gaia Blueberry & Yuzu Sour.
Pouring the pink/purple colour of sugar plum skin, Gaia holds a light head and erupts with sugary sweet and puckering sour notes courtesy of the titular ingredients. Speaking of the titular ingredients, they work well together: the blueberries give your tongue a sickly sweet squeeze before releasing so the yuzu can tickle your tongue with a sadistic stab of sour.
Presumably, the 5.4 percent ABV is doing a little bit to add some extra heady punch, but at 1.4 standards it still stands up as a good sunny day option or session starter. And the best place to enjoy a jar is at 7th Day's home in Brookvale; drink there and $1 from each pint sold in March will go to Dress For Success, an organisation helping to improve the employability of disadvantaged women in NSW.
