When it comes to the new-ish Australian hop variety Eclipse, folks generally fall into two categories: those who love it and those who haven't tried it. If you’re not one of the former just yet, Moffat Beach Brewing Co are doing their best to remedy the situation with Shadow of the Moon, an all-Eclipse strong pale ale. Brewed in partnership with Hop Products Australia, the beer was originally intended to be showcased at this year’s BrewCon on the Sunshine Coast before COVID-19 – as it is wont to do – put a firm stop to that.
Novel coronavirus be damned, this beer is a real celebration of the hop variety. They’re absolutely not kidding about the mandarin notes here for a start. It’s highly aromatic and the beer bursts with the ripe, juicy fruit and zest, as well as a strong hit of fresh pine needles. A smooth malt profile balances out a decent whack of bitterness to create something that’s balanced and – like the real thing – blindingly good.
