The Wolf of the Willows crew were avowed fans of IPAs before they launched their first beer. In 2023, well into their journey as pro brewers, they started looking at how they could take such beers into a new dimension. Pineapple Express is their first foray into that new dimension, one that sees them adding terpenes to a California IPA.
Terpenes are an aromatic compound found in a range of plants and botanicals, including hops and cannabis. In this beer, they’ve drawn on a compound from the sativa strain and used the botanical blend of terpenes featuring myrcene, pinene and linalool. This has been utilised alongside Vic Secret, Citra and BRU-1 hops to create a beer that can only be described as “layered”. Alternatively, you might like to go with: there’s quite a bit going on.
That includes, pine, grapefruit, pineapple, sweet rockmelon and lemon – all quite present without being in competition with each other. As a result, it’s very drinkable, with a bitter, clean finish that makes it the kind of beer destined to disappear from your glass in a hurry.
There’s no CBD or THC in it by the way; check out the brewery's helpful explainer.
