As we alluded to in May, 2023’s winter was always going to one filled with rich, big and dark beers from Hawkers. They certainly haven't let us down either and while we'll cover their many barrel-aged and white stouts once we've had a chance to savour them, let's start with this year's Barleywine.
The can design might look like a scene from a sci-fi villain’s laboratory of doom (or creation, depending on your thoughts on Frankenstein's monster) but drinking it is more like being a side character in Dickens rather than Shelley. Not one of the ones about kids living on the street either, but one about high society, where they sit around and discuss world affairs, social scandals and get caught up in the French Revolution. As they do it, they might enjoy something that pours mahogany brown that tastes of rich layers of toffee, burnt caramel, dried figs, cherry and Port.
