It gets might cold in Tassie this time of year but Hobart is a place that embraces the icy temperatures and darkness. They even have a small but popular arts festival to celebrate it which you may have heard of, Dark Mofo. T-Bone Brewing are well prepared for the season too, with two warming beers ready for winter. Peanut Butter Porter is a returning beer that’s also something of a nutty sibling to the Tassie brewery’s ever-popular, Choc-Milk Stout. It’s a beer that’s impressively rich and smooth so if you imagine a bock of chocolate being thrown into a blender with peanuts and some chocolate syrup added for good measure, then you know what you’re getting your hands on.
Dialling things up a bit is Barrel Aged Big Old Stout. Aside from being surrounded by natural beauty, another benefit of brewing in Tasmania is the bounty of local whisky barrels. T-Bone didn’t have to look too far either with the brewery sourcing some from The Remnant Whisky Company which was launched by Peter Wignell from Begrive Distillery (T-Bone cofounder Tom Wignell’s dad) to secure a collection of whisky barrels and support those who had invested in them after a famous local distillery went bust. The barrels borrowed by T-Bone once housed the distillery’s The Scoundrel release, and alongside the complex array of burnt sugar, dark chocolate and licorice from the stout, there are tasty layers of fig, toffee, vanilla and plum meets pair.
