Back in ‘87, a very younger version of your writer crammed himself into Wembley Stadium along with 40,000 other fans to watch the resurrection of Ziggy Stardust. As Space Oddity enveloped our senses, breaking the tethers that anchored us to the earth, we soared up into the stratosphere searching for Major Tom. Either that or someone had slipped a Mickey Finn into our beer...
Fast forward to today and there are no psychoactive drugs in Space Hop Odyssey IPA: it’s purely glammed up with Galaxy, Comet and Astra hops. This canned release from the team at Six String is a doff of the cap to the late genius that was Bowie, an IPA that pours hazy on appearance and is all passionfruit and pineapple upfront. Sweet tropical fruit, peach and citrus flavours are complemented by a grass and earthy undertone from the addition of the Comet hops.
The finish has a subtly dry bitterness, much as Major Tom may have felt as he sat hurtling far above the world in his tin can, where there was nothing he could do. Shame he couldn’t have popped one of these beers to keep him company.
