Your Mates Brewing

It’s the age old story. Mate meets mate. Mate dreams about making beer for the Sunshine Coast with mate. Mate opens brewery that serves up rippin’ brews with mate. At least, that’s the story of Hep and McGarry, the duo behind Your Mates Brewing.

Perhaps you heard of them when they started gypsy brewing in 2015, when their pale ale Larry first showed up on the scene. Maybe you met them in 2017, while they were slinging brews at The Basement in Nambour, or in 2018 at their temporary taproom in Moffat Beach. Whether you joined their story at the beginning, or are just meeting them for the first time, you’ll find they like to keep it simple: good times, and good beers, with good mates.

Their brewery in Warana on the Sunshine Coast is a friendly, beery oasis in an industrial area – just look for the big Larry out the front. The moment you step inside, you feel like you’re at a mate’s place: on your left is the pool room, waiting for you to grab a cue; on your right is a gallery wall, showing photos of Hep and McGarry sinking tinnies, catching fish, and drinking beer out of an Akubra.

Walk in a little further and you’re met with lofty ceilings covered in timber rafters, polished concrete keeping things cool, merch on the walls, and seating for 150. There’s a stage for live music and a couple of TV screens to keep the big kids entertained. There's even a playground for the little ’uns – the whole family’s welcome at Your Mates.

But, of course, what makes this the best room in the house is the abundance of beer. Between their two brew kits, Your Mates can brew 3,000 litres of beer at a time, and have ten times that amount bubbling away in the 14 fermenters… not to mention all the kegs they can fit in their mammoth cold room.

Larry (Australian pale ale) and Macca (lager) are your best buddies on a sunny day, but they’re not the only ones looking to hang out. The staff are always happy to have a yarn about all 12 beers on tap, including a bunch of small batches and experimental styles only available at the brewpub.

And it wouldn’t be a brewpub without pub grub. There’s a full kitchen pumping out bites, burgers, parmy, bangers and mash, and Larry’s Braised Beef with beer gravy. It goes without saying there’s also plenty of seafood, a must-have for a Sunny Coast watering hole.

When it’s time to head home (even your mates need a break from you), grab a growler full of your favourite beer, or a four-pack of tinnies to take with you. Take Larry with you to a BBQ, because he’s always the life of the party. Or sit around a fire with Donnie, the dark ale who brings his smoky aroma and smooth style with him everywhere he goes.

On a day when you can’t make it in to the brewpub, don’t worry – Your Mates can always be found up and down the coast, or even on occasion chilling in Brisbane, ready for good times. Frothin’.

Your Mates Brewing Eddie

Published July 17, 2020
To a cast of characters already including Donnie, Macca, Sally and, of course, Larry, can now be added another mate as Sunshine Coast brewery Your Mates expand their core lineup. Eddie, or #extremeeddie as the brewery is calling him, isn’t a beer pushing at the extremes, however; rather, he's a 3.5 percent XPA. While he may be lower on the booze scale, Eddie doesn't skimp on flavour. He pours a perfectly clear and somewhat bright golden orange and is laced with of melon, pineapple, nectarine and… Read more

Your Mates Sally IPA

Published June 28, 2019
Your Mates Larry, Donnie and Macca have welcomed a newcomer to the fold: the brewery's first female character. She's called Sally and started hitting taps and fridges throughout the Sunshine Coast as winter 2019 approached. Named via a customer poll in which she beat out other worthy nominations Izzy, Daisy, Annie, Matilda and Poppy, she's a West Coast style IPA featuring American hops Chinook, Citra, Simcoe and El Dorado. It took the brewers a few attempts to get the combination they were after… Read more

Your Mates Larry

If the brewing company name wasn't enough, or if you hadn't spent time in the breezy company of Your Mates founders Matt Hepburn and Christian MacGarry, the approach they've taken to their beers should make it clear this Sunshine Coast crew is all about embracing laid-back Aussie good time vibes. Hence Larry, their first release and flagship beer. complete with "summer-lovin’, party-shirt wearin’" namesake on the tinnies. It's a pale ale that sits very much in the easy-drinking category,… Read more

Your Mates Donnie

It's one of those interesting quirks that, for all that Queensland once had a reputation as a place where craft beer was highly unlikely to catch on (and we can see how well that prediction turned out...), it's also been a place that, even prior to it becoming the powerhouse it is now, you'd likely find something dark on tap. It might be Carlton Black in a surf club or an English-inspired malt-led beer at a more beer focused venue, but clearly there was always at least some level of appetite for… Read more

Your Mates Macca

Picture the scene. You’ve got a brewery. Your focus is on sharing good times and good beer with mates. You put those beers in cans and your brewery is located on the Sunshine Coast. What do you need? A midstrength of course. To fit that bill, Your Mates have gone with Macca, a lager that sits at 3.5 percent ABV. It might be fairly light but that’s not to say it’s lacking flavour. The malt body provides a biscuity sweetness and the hops come in for a soft tropical mix. Will Ziebell… Read more

Your Mates Tilly

The Your Mates crew are all about making beers that are easy to drink and easy to share with friends. Their ginger beer Tilly fits right in: well-balanced and accessible, but still full of personality. As soon as you crack the can you can smell the spiciness of the ginger. With each sip, the sweetness and ginger burn play off each other, perhaps with almost a hint of cinnamon as well. The brewery pushes Tilly as a perfect drink for music festivals, and with the character on the label sporting an… Read more

Your Mates Kiwi, Pine & Lime Sour & Karen's Sour

Published July 20, 2022
If it’s a sour taste with a side of fruit you're seeking, Your Mates Brewing might well have you covered. OK, so we can’t really say Kiwi, Pine & Lime Sour has a side of fruit, however, with the beer instead bringing quite a hefty mix of tropical flavours. Unsurprisingly given the pine and lime, the mind at first turns to one of Australia’s greatest inventions, the Splice ice cream with its wonderful blend of flavours being captured in this sour. The kiwifruit meanwhile comes across more… Read more

Your Mates Lemon Myrtle Sour & Red IPA

Published July 8, 2022
Your Mates might be best known for the mates that make up their core range but tins without names are an increasingly common sight from the Sunshine Coast brewery. Lemon Myrtle Sour is such a beer and it’s certainly one that feels like it was brewed for the Queensland coast. From the first crack of the can, lemonade leaps out and it’s that flavour that coats the palate. But as a refreshing zest and tartness soon following through, think if it as the beer equivalent of a sour lolly. Red IPA… Read more

Your Mates Brewing Aussie Lager, Cold IPA & Mixed Berry Sour

Published April 26, 2022
The likes of Larry, Sally, Donnie and Eddie might be well-known to Your Mates fans but not every beer brewed by the Sunshine Coast brewery gets a name of its own. Instead, the brewery’s limited release beers are sent out to the world with nothing but a style to introduce themselves to would-be drinkers, while holding onto the possibility that one day, they too might be given a set of eyes and a smiling face. NZ Hops 2022: Range & Your Mates

Published January 17, 2022
And now for something completely different. Or at least two beers following a different path to their comrades in the NZ Hops Great Brew Challenge from a couple of Queensland's most high profile breweries. Range have taken the hop formerly known as Brooklyn, Moutere, and sprinkled it (well, dry-hopped it) liberally into a lightly hazy, golden lager called No Place Like Moutere. Deep, somewhat resinous citrus aromas and flavours (grapefruit is the key characteristic according to Moutere's growers)… Read more

Your Mates Pineapple XPA

Published February 2, 2019
This beer’s got Queensland written all over it. With the Big Pineapple providing the inspiration, and Tropico Fruits in Yandina providing the fresh Australian pineapple concentrate, it’ll be hard for you not to taste the Sunshine Coast in every sip. The acid from the pineapple brings a whisper of sour to the aroma. But, even though this beer’s full of pineapple and dry-hopped with two pineapple-y hops (El Dorado and Chinook), pineapple isn’t the only flavour you'll pick up: it also offers… Read more

Your Mates Mango Saison & Lychee Saison

Published February 1, 2019
Who doesn’t love a split batch beer? Your Mates brewed a batch of saison, divided it in half, then added different fruit to the two halves: one half was blended with mango puree, while the other half features lychee puree. In the mango version, there are two aromas vying for your nose, as the ripe mango sweetness and banana esters take turns stealing your attention. The liquid is almost opaque in appearance, and you can feel that thick texture in your mouth as you drink. This saison is a big,… Read more

Your Mates Apple Cider

Published February 1, 2019
Their catch-cry may be "good beer", but they make a crackin’ cider as well. It made sense to Your Mates to use the best apples they could get their hands on, so they looked no further than Stanthorpe, which is famous for growing top quality apples. They used 800 litres of juice in the ferment, plus 200 litres to blend back and return some of the sweetness and flavour to the mix. The resulting cider is a light lemon colour, with a touch of cloudiness. It’s not sugary, like those alcopop… Read more
