3 Ravens have let fly two dark releases amid this chilly Melbourne autumn, one a returning classic and the other originally destined for venues but quickly moved into cans. The returning beer is an historic one in the modern craft beer world too, with 3 Ravens Black a stout that was in the brewery’s core range from 2003, launching back way back when the brewery started before sliding away in recent times. It’s back for 2020 and looks worlds apart from the original's bottles, instead sitting inside white, text-heavy tinnies that urge calm. Inside is an oatmeal stout with a silky texture and flavours sitting where chocolate meets berry and with the slightest of nutty notes.
The new release is Espresso Quarantini, a brown porter inspired by the signature cocktail of Melbourne’s Mesa Verde. Brewed with coffee, dark agave syrup and French oak chips, originally the beer was meant to be infused with a whole lot of tequila. However, should you choose to you can still do that from the comfort of your own home. Or, alternatively, try it as a boilermaker and see how the spirit’s flavours blend with the beer’s light cherry characters that in turn blend with its caramel and roast coffee undertones.
