As a beer drinker, I would usually let World Margarita Day pass me by the same as I would for International Temperance Day or Hide Some Zucchini In Your Neighbour’s Yard Day. However, Bondi brewers Curly Lewis have concocted their El Tequileno Lagerita specifically for this day, the base of which is formed by their limited release El Gringo Cerveza.
While you need to visit their brewpub to sample the Lagerita, you can get hld of El Gringo to sample at home. It pours an incredibly pale butter yellow with a head that quickly retreats to make way for a refreshing treat.
The malts are the real star here, a blend of rice and corn in the mix, which pass across the tongue like a context-appropriate Mexican wave. It’s easy to see why this taproom hit became available in cans. It’s crisp, a little dry yet very wet.
As the can suggests this one is best "enjoyed horizontally", although that might not be ideal if you fancy attempting to create a lagerita of your own…
