Craft beer lovers think of American pale ales as a classic style – after all, it’s been around for more than 40 years. That’s prehistoric in the craft beer movement.
I’d forgive Belgian brewers for sniggering at that, since they mark the age of their beer styles in centuries. But at Madocke, they don’t mock – they make.
Citra, Mosaic and Sequoia hops lead the charge in Madocke’s American pale ale, giving it a taste that’s caught between a modern APA and ‘classic’ APA (chuckle). The nose is awash with tropical fruit notes – I got plenty of sticky pawpaw and some sweet pineapple – which give way in the mouth to pine and a touch of dankness. This is all accompanied by a biscuity malt profile that gives a nice full feeling in the mouth without being particularly sweet.
