Firstly, an apology. We’ve been so busy attending and filming events in recent weeks that we haven’t always found the time to bring you the goods. So, time to catch up, starting with a pictorial report on the Victorian Women of Beer event that was hosted by Beer Diva Kirrily Waldhorn earlier this month as part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival.
It took place at Thornbury Theatre, in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, a grand old place for such a venture. Using the Beer Diva’s multi-media show debuted at the Sydney Opera House in 2010 as its starting point, it presented a history of beer and, in particular, women’s role in its evolution. She was joined onstage by five women who play key roles in the growing Victorian craft beer industry, from brewery owners to brewers, who each presented a beer from their brewery:
Nardia McGrath, Bridge Road’s Saison
Beth Walkenhorst, Hargreaves Hill’s Hefeweizen
Karen Golding, Red Hill’s Bohemian Pilsner
Jayne Lewis, Mountain Goat’s Rare Breed IPA
Sam Fí¼ss, True South’s Cherry Bomb
As you can see here…
Around 200 people attended, including some Crafty Pint competition winners and Mrs Crafty Keg, and were treated to a heady mixture of insight, excellent beers, entertainment and a steady slide into loose tongues and risque humour (although the slide didn’t go quite as far as during rehearsals, apparently), wrapped up by a closing performance from Beth, displaying her other skills – those of an opera singer.
