Two Birds Brewing (Lion/Kirin)

Heading home from a first visit to the Nest, Two Birds Brewing's home in the Melbourne suburb of Spotswood, a question arose in the Crafty mind: "Is there another brewing company in Australia that has nailed so many things as well when it comes to luring in new craft beer drinkers?" Having pondered the question on occasion since, we're going with: "No."

Sure, to date brewer Jayne Lewis hasn't been tempted to brew a 12 percent, 150 IBU, barrel-aged, spiced Belgian Imperial IPA to satisfy the extreme elements of the beer fancying world, but in every other respect, alongside long time friend and business partner, Danielle Allen, she's done a lot of things rather well to make Two Birds a brewery with incredibly broad appeal.

The branding is eye-catching and colourful and shot through with flashes of cheek. The Birds themselves are just as colourful (and full of cheek) and have put in tens of thousands of kilometres and countless hours to attend pretty much every beer event on the planet since they launched their first beer in August 2011, always managing to keep smiling even when hurting inside and proving relentlessly enthusiastic ambassadors for craft beer. The Nest, which has housed their brewery and bar since the middle of 2014, is equally bright and welcoming and has proved hugely popular since day one.

As for the beers, Jayne's mantra of "balance and approachability" may not be one to raise instantly the hairs on the back of a beer nerd's neck but, since launching with the wide appeal, crowd-pleasing Golden Ale, everything bearing the Two Birds name has packed plenty flavour, from trophy-winning regular releases such as the Sunset Ale and Taco to award-winning one-offs such as those brewed with the Pink Boots Society.

While on the subject of awards and trophies, it's not just the beers that have collected silverware; the brewery has won champion titles at the Australian International Beer Awards and Craft Beer Awards as, having started in winemaking in WA, dipped her toes into cider at Little Creatures then polished her beer education with Matilda Bay and Mountain Goat, Jayne has proved herself adept at crafting pocket gems of beers.

As for the Two Birds tale, it started out with Jayne and Danielle having their beers (Golden and Sunset) brewed under license at various breweries while searching for a home. Said home was found online by Jayne's husband, Louis Bucci, while waiting for a flight at LAX and, having been built in part by Louis (who has a wooden step named in his honour as a result) is now responsible for all Two Birds draught beer.

The Nest, as it's known, has grown steadily too, now pouring 12 beers (including a couple of guests) and offering up beer friendly food several days a week. The hospo side of things spills from the bar to take over as much brewery floor space as possible inside a warehouse where huge murals cover the walls not hidden by a growing forest of stainless steel.

In February 2017, they opened their own packaging line, having taken over the adjacent warehouse, thus bringing all production under their own roof and their core range has since been tweaked too.

Arguably the biggest change in a while came at the start of 2021 when the brewing company was acquired by the Fermentum Group, joining a stable of brands including the likes of Stone & Wood and Fixation. Dani and Jayne, of course, have stayed on to continue their unique and inspirational journey.

Two Birds Brewing Pale Ale

Published March 1, 2017
Two Bird's Pale Ale started life as, Oaty McOatface - a name even the most out-there breweries probably wouldn't stick with for a core range beer. But to this day you can still see remnants of the original beer, with Pale's design featuring a small flying sailboat piloted by a bird. Originally brewed as a draught only release in late 2016, the beer itself has been slightly tweaked since and features two types of oats and an American and Australian hop bill. The result is a very pale beer dominated… Read more

Two Birds Taco Beer

We clearly remember our first meeting with Two Birds Taco. The Crafty team had just walked into the Royal Exhibition Building for the opening session of the 2013 Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular and chosen the ten beers we'd put on our first pair of paddles. Nick O returned and declared: "I've changed one of them and gone for Two Birds Taco instead." Two Birds Sunset Ale

Published May 15, 2012
An instant favourite at Crafty Towers as soon as it arrived on the scene as the second Two Birds release was this red ale going by the name Sunset. Drinkers are first met by a rather enticing combo of tropical and citrus aromas, backed up with a touch of toffee that hints at the rich malt flavours to follow. With a blend of nine different malts, Sunset is full-flavoured and pretty full-bodied too for a beer of its alcohol content and the well-balanced take on the style has found Two Birds fans aplenty… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Summer Ale

In Australian craft beer circles, passionfruit surely has to be one of the most important fruits. Helped in no part by the success of Stone & Wood's Pacific Ale and the Australian-born Galaxy, hop-derived passionfruit characteristics have, it's fair to say, become rather popular in beer. Then there’s the long list of kettle sours that use passionfruit juice or purĂ©e to great warm weather and allow the fruit's tarter side to marry well the style's sourness. Allegedly spring is going on in Melbourne right now and while there might not be much warm weather, breweries still have sunnier days on their minds. Among them are Two Birds and their limited-release gose, Bramble Bang, which features blackberry juice, lime zest and mint. Mosaic Smash (Single Malt and Single Hop) is Beerland's tribute to Mosaic hops, here supported by Maris Otter malts from the UK. Two Birds Brewing Trail Blazer Aussie Lager

Published March 21, 2018
Trail Blazer is the beer created by Two Birds Brewing in conjunction with the Western Bulldogs AFL Women's team for the 2018 season – a season that's taking the trailblazing, collaborating women all the way to the footy finals. Initially, the beer was available at the Whitten Oval but, as the season moves towards its close, the cans are heading further afield. You can read about the beer's genesis here or simply go out and grab one of the red, blue and white cans, designed to reflect both the AFLW… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Autumn IPA

Published March 21, 2018
As the AFLW collab Trail Blazer joins the Two Birds lineup on a more permanent basis, it's followed out of the Spotswood brewery by their autumn 2018 seasonal. It's another IPA from the brewery that's had a lot of fun with the style in recent years, from the glittery Bowie tribute Stardust IPA to versions inspired by piña colada and lemongrass tea. Here, it's a rather more straightforward affair, just hops (Amarilla, Simcoe and Topaz), malt, water and yeast. The brewers talk of an IPA that's "fiercely… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Stardust IPA

Published February 21, 2018
If you're a frequenter of the online elements of the craft beer world, you may well already be acquainted with this beer from Two Birds Brewing. It's the first release from their new pilot system and it's an IPA they've looked to pack full of tropical, pineapple and pine characters. All of which is well and good, but not why you'll likely have come across it. No, the main reason is that it's a beer that glitters thanks to the addition of, well, glitter. Two Birds Brewing Pilsner

Published December 11, 2017
If you're stinging for some Kiwi hops this summer, Two Birds Brewing has you covered. The unmistakable essence of South Island lupulin goodness is the defining character of the Spotwood brewery's new seasonal release. The fruity aromas are as sharp and crystalline as the beer is gleaming and golden: they reckon white peach and freshly crushed grapes, we'd add gooseberry to the mix too – not to mention something recalling the lively herbal kick of a South East Asian salad. Two Birds Brewing Passion Victim

Published November 5, 2017
Helped in no small part by the success of Stone & Wood's Pacific Ale, hop derived passionfruit characteristics have, it's fair to say, become rather popular in beer. And, with summer approaching, Two Birds has decided to send its most passionfruity beer out into the world, combining the Galaxy hops that make Pacific Ale what it is with a couple of citrusy, fruit salady US hops (Mosaic and Amarillo) and, just to be sure, some passionfruit puree. It's a combination that has Passion Victim, the… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Maltergeist

Published September 26, 2017
Two Birds have been embracing all things fancy dress this spring, it seems. Not long ago, they were pouring beers as part of the St Ives Medieval Faire, where they debuted a Marzen (a darker, maltier form of lager with German origins that's typically brewed as an Oktoberfestbier) to keep the jousters refreshed between bouts of trying to remove each others' heads. And now said beer has morphed into their Oktoberfest release. As the name suggests, they've stuck to tradition and looked to put specialty… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Saison 2017

Published September 4, 2017
A look at the weather forecast for their hometown of Melbourne may suggest otherwise but, allegedly, spring has sprung, meaning it's time for Two Birds' second bottled seasonal release. It's one with which they look to reassure us of better times ahead thanks to a label featuring a rising sun, blooming flowers, butterflies and, um, the Delorean from Back to the Future on a cloud. In the winter of 2016, Two Birds released Double Sunset – a souped up take on their Sunset Ale – as a celebration of their twin wins at the Australian International Beer Awards (Champion Brewery and Champion Amber/Dark Ale for the Sunset. The beer proved rather popular and not just with drinkers – it's the in-house favourite of the head brewers too. So now it's back and it's been bottled too. Two Birds Brewing Knock On Wood

Published June 26, 2017
June 2017 saw Two Birds Brewing turn six. Among the dozen of their own beers that lined the taps for the big day at at their Nest in Spotswood was a new birthday beer. It was Knock On Wood, not just a birthday beer but the brewery's first barrel aged release too – sixth anniversaries are traditionally celebrated with wooden gifts, you see. Two Birds Brewing Enigma India Pale Lager

If our ongoing experience is anything to go by, relatively new Aussie hop variety Enigma is a cracking hop to use in lagers. Bridge Road's Enigma Pilsner is a beer that should be seen around more, while at the 2017 Fresh Hop Beer Festival, Moo Brew's wet hop Enigma Pils – the best expression of the hop to date, according to one other brewer during a Q&A we hosted there – was first to blow. Opening up decision making to the people can have mixed results. While it may transpire that The Donald has been on a wind up all this time and doesn't plan to set advances in social equality back decades and ignore climate change in favour of erecting a giant Trump sign on the moon, it seems all too likely that the decisions of two million people fewer than voted for his opponent will have condemned the world to a period of seat-of-your-pants instability. Two Birds Single Origin Ale

Published September 15, 2016
The rise of craft beer has led to an increased interest in the provenance of beers, in many ways. Some people are keen to know who brews their beer, both in terms of ownership of the brewery and where it is actually made (particularly as in some cases brewing companies don't make it easy for you to find out) and also in terms of the ingredients. This is most often seen in the case of hops, particularly at harvest time. In the case of this limited release from Two Birds, the aim is also to shine a… Read more

It's increasingly pointless trying to pick out trends in the beer world as the diversity of directions in which brewers are heading shows no sign of abating. Two Birds Brewing Red Velvet

Women of Beer Unite 2015 Red Ale Variations

Two Birds Bantam IPA – RETIRED

The term "session IPA" is one that has seen its popularity grow and have its value debated in equal measure since first appearing on the scene. "Isn't it just a hoppier pale or a lower ABV IPA, in which case it's not an IPA?" is the typical starting point for any conversation. Indeed, there have been some examples in which the attempt to get more hops without the balancing malt and booze have led to beers deserving of debate, but the Bantam is one that seems likely to render any… Read more

Two Birds Golden Ale – RETIRED

Where it all began the Birds. Having taken her leave from Mountain Goat to embark on what's turned out to be a rather successful venture with Danielle, Jayne's first beer was both a safe first step and one that epitomised the approachable side of her ethos. It was ale fairly prescient too, for while there are dozens of local brewers with golden ales on their rosters now, back in 2011 they weren't nearly as common.
