Since opening, Palling Bros have shown a desire to experiment within a broad range of styles, but an affinity for traditional European beers is evident. Their beers don’t typically venture far from what’s expected for the given style and, with many of the brewery’s customers being relative newcomers to craft beer, the Palling Bros approach is an excellent way for people to discover classic Euro styles.
Having said that, smoked beers are rare, particularly in Australia, and even rarer still is a smoked helles rather than a smoked porter or a rauchbier. It makes the The Smoulder a rarity in the modern beer landscape, bringing a subtle level of smoke that's balanced with the delicate poise you should expect from a helles. It means that if you wanted to introduce anyone to smoke in beer, then this would be a great way to do it.
NWK is a soft, light and crisp new world kolsch. Pouring clear with a straw colour and fluffy white head, it’s more full-bodied than its lighter bottom-fermented cousins in the land of lager. As the "new world" suggests, this beer does deviate from a traditional kolsch with the addition of Moutere and Rakau hops from NZ and, while they are restrained, they leave a touch of modern hop flavours behind in this easy-drinking, refreshing libation.
Finally, Frau Helga is possibly the most conventional of this group. This Vienna lager has an off-white head and a pale amber colour, while a sweet, biscuity flavour and smooth texture is brought by the rich malt. You'll also find a touch of the herbal thanks to the noble hop Saaz and a medium bitterness on the finish.
