Conduct quick search through the Crafty directory and you’ll find most golden ales listed with the word "retired" next to them. Two Birds launched their brand with their Golden Ale in 2011, but, sadly, it was dropped from the brewery’s core range in 2019. Bridge Road and Hargreaves Hill’s examples of the style suffered a similar fate, with Venom one of very few well-known holdouts.

The approachable style has brought many a craft-curious consumer into the fold and it’s precisely this function the beer performs at Palling Bros Brewery in Heathcote. A relatively inoffensive style in a tourism rich region, it was an obvious choice for the brewery’s core range from day one.

Its appearance is, well, golden, naturally, with a hint of haze. Slightly bitter, with tropical flavours and aromatics, the beer is unassuming at first: approachable and making no bold statements at the outset. But, as you settle in and set your glass down, it awakens. With each subsequent sip, the flavour lingers on the palate and the aroma seems more prominent. Before you know it, you find yourself wanting more – and more.
