Back in the days when this place was the King Street Brewhouse, their house stout, Cannonball, won a trophy at the Australian International Beer Awards and picked up a loyal following with drinkers. It must therefore have been more than a little tempting, following the renovation and rebrand, to keep that beer going and perhaps just give it a new name. But, no, All Hands would be all new – and the new stout would be quite different.
Yes, it’s full of the classic chocolate and coffee characters that help define the style but there’s a little something extra going on behind the scenes too. They experimented with blending a tiny percentage – for a tiny percentage is all that’s required – of sour beer into the main brew to which adds a pleasing little bite to compliment the bitterness. Served on nitro, this is the kind of smooth treat that’ll please fans of a certain famous Irish stout.
