Despite the pervasiveness of marketing in general, coupled with consumer desires that can apparently only be sated through the availability of everything all of the time, it still seems strangely surprising when November rolls around, tinsel starts to lines shelves, festive tunes hover in the space above aisles and the campaign for Christmas begins in earnest. If you inhabit the beer world, in recent years, there's been another reliable barometer of the imminence of the festive season: the arrival of 4 Pines’ Before, During & After Christmas Pack. In the past, this four beer box set has contained a couple of core beers, a re-release of a past Keller Door favourite and something new in bottles, and 2017 continues that theme with the Pale Ale and Kolsch wrapped up alongside 2015’s Citrus IPA and a first packaged appearance for the Lemon Melon Wit.
The last of these sees lemon zest and watermelon added to a witbier base. But although the lemon and melon characters may be the talking points by virtue of being slightly unusual additions, they’re not necessarily the defining feature. You could argue that belongs to the wit-iness – its pronounced yeasty and banana esters showing themselves handsomely along with a subtle spiciness while the fruity elements serve to give everything a bit of spritz and lift. It all results in a light and lovely, lean and refreshing, balanced but interesting beer that ought to go down well on Christmas morning, if it manages to last that long in your fridge.
