WA's beer scene is yet to experience a decline in hop-forward lagers dominating taps and fridges, with just about every brewery having now released their interpretation of a beer within this increasingly popular bracket of styles: cold IPAs, West Coast pilsners, OG India pale lagers. Some breweries have been on that crisp and hoppy train for longer than others, however, and if anyone knows their way around such beers, it would be the long-time IPL core-ranging Beerfarm.
This release is not the core range IPL many know and love, but a juiced-up 8 percent ABV take on the style that features Magnum, Saaz, Mosaic, Mega Terps Blend (a brand of terpenes) and late harvest Nelson Sauvin hops – all colluding to create a dense guava and stone fruit character with dank, sticky pine undertones. Bitterness here is high but well in check for style, complementing tropical fruit juice intensity from an abundance of hops.
The finish features plenty of bitterness with some persistent resinous character alongside peach and citrus aromas while the light, crisp base beer alleviates any cloyingness you might expect from a beer of such heft.
