In their final beer drop of 2024, it’s fair to say Good Land have covered plenty of palates. Earlier in the week, we looked at the leaner and hoppier side of their final few beers and now we turn to those that are a little more likely to shock some family members over Christmas.
Pastel Neon Sour will certainly catch the eye too, with the boysenberry, blackberry and raspberry entry into the brewery’s sour series pouring a fairy-floss pink. It would also happen to work wonders with your Christmas pav too, thanks to its sweet berry and dessert-like aromas and more restrained flavour where each sip seems to bring one of those berries to the fore. The sourness meanwhile is ever-present without being dominating and as the can disappears, I can’t help but think of a sorbet minus any real sweetness.
When we chatted with Good Land founder Jimmy Krekelberg for our Victorian Year In Beer podcast episode, his eyes lit up as he spoke of his love for creating barrel-aged pastry stouts and hoped to do more of them in 2025. We can only assume then that he had a smile from ear to ear while coming up with Shadow Perception; a barrel-aged imperial stout with coconut, banana and marshmallow.
Even with all those adjuncts, my first thought was “coffee” although thanks to whole load of roasted espresso that soon was replaced with banana lollies, vanilla and toasted coconut. If that’s not quite enough decadence, there’s also dark chocolate and brown sugar to be found and the beer is so slick, you’d be a little worried if a tanker full of Shadow Perception hit a reef and started spilling into the ocean.
