What's the recipe for a collab beer? Friendship + a good idea + a bit of work × a lot of chit-chat.
Once upon a time, Shambles’ lead brewer, Henry Tanner, worked alongside Luke Monks at 4 Pines and their friendship began. Although they moved on to different roles, their bond - and love for IPAs - remained strong. So, when Luke, fresh from taking the role of brewer at Two Mates Brewing in NSW, reached out with the idea to brew a collab IPA, it was a no-brainer. Third Wheel IPA celebrates the evolution of the IPA style over the past couple of decades, stripping away the crystal malts to focus on a cleaner, drier finish while still packing in that hop punch.
That hoppy hit comes in quite a modern format thanks to the way it showcases HPA’s next-generation liquid hop extracts in addition to hop pellets. Flex provides balanced bitterness, Citra and Mosaic Incognito in the whirlpool gives an aromatic punch, Galaxy Spectrum added in the fermenter for even more hop intensity as well as we dry-hopping with Citra, Mosaic, and Vic Secret for a full-on hoppy finish. If you’ve been curious about the potential of liquid hop products, this is the beer to try. The result is a crisp and bold IPA, bursting with bright citrus and tropical fruit flavours, a hint of pine and zest, and layered complexity.
